The Superstar of the Year?

If I told you at the beginning of 2019 that Kofi Kingston may very well be the Superstar of the Year when it's all said and done, you would have shown great incredulity toward my statement. However, Kingston would go onto defy all odds and break through the glass ceiling to become the WWE Champion at WrestleMania.

The ludicrous part was that none of this was supposed to happen. In the lead-up to the Elimination Chamber, Mustafa Ali fell with an untimely eye injury, which gave way to the birth of KofiMania. In a gauntlet match to determine the last entrant in the Elimination Chamber match, Kingston put on a magnificent display of resilience, strength and determination. He earned his way into the Elimination Chamber match for Daniel Bryan's WWE Championship and outlasted 4 other men before being defeated by the champion. That night, he earned the reverence and love of fans all over the globe.

The fans backed Kingston and the man definitely delivered, stealing the show every time he entered the ring. His popularity surge was reminiscent to that of Daniel Bryan's in late 2013-early 2014. The Dreadlocked Dynamo persevered through Vince McMahon's antics and his brethren stood with him through the thick and thin. At WrestleMania, 11 years of hard-work and dedication would finally pay off as Kingston pinned Bryan to become the new WWE Champion.

The New Day veteran would go onto have a lengthy reign, defending the title against the likes of Randy Orton, Samoa Joe and Dolph Ziggler. Unfortunately for him, Brock Lesnar put an end to Kingston's fairy-tale story within 10 seconds. As expected, Kingston re-entered the tag-team division. Along with Big E, he won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship in November, and they will end the year as champions.
