With just a few more days to go, the card for the Extreme Rules is pretty much decided, and during the go – home RAW a couple of days ago, Ryback gained the psychological advantage over the WWE champion, John Cena. In the World Heavyweight title scene, Dolph Ziggler suffered a serious concussion, which would mean that he will not defend the World title at the Extreme Rules PPV, and instead of the Ladder match, this past week, Teddy Long announced an “I Quit” match between Jack Swagger and Alberto Del Rio, to determine the number one contender for the World title. In the end, the card looks good, and knowing WWE, the PPV will not leave any lasting memories in the fans’ minds.
Last year’s PPV did pretty good numbers, thanks to the returning Brock Lesnar who took on John Cena. If WWE wants this year’s PPV to outnumber last year’s PPV, a lot of effort has to be put in, especially since the booking has been very poor in the past few weeks. The promos have been boring and the storylines have been nonsensical and redundant. WWE can change all of that on the night of Extreme Rules, and if they manage to do that, with the card and the star power, WWE can easily do good numbers this year as well. In this article, I take a look at five such possibilities which can make the PPV and the WWE interesting once again.
5. A phenomenal “I Quit” match
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
At number five is the “I Quit” match between ADR and Swagger, and although the WWE doesn’t have as much role to play in this as much as the competitors, with proper booking and a clean finish, this match has all the tools to be the match of the night. The bout involves two of the best pure athletes in the WWE, and if everything goes well, their match can be the highlight of the PPV. They had already put on a good match at WrestleMania, and this will give them a new dimension to work with, and I for one, hope they come out with flying colours.
4. The Shield winning the tag team titles
The Shield face Team Hell No this Sunday on PPV for the WWE tag team titles, and for a long time now, Shield has Team Hell No’s number. This Sunday, the clock can finally run out on Team Hell No, as the hounds of justice look to capture the world tag team belts, and thus add their first gold to the faction. It is about time Daniel Bryan gets into the singles division, and giving The Shield the tag team belts would add some legitimacy to the group. By winning the tag team championships, the faction can defend it under the Freebird rule, and have a long run as the tag team champions.
3. Christian’s return
One of the best talkers and in-ring performers is the veteran Christian, who was sidelined because of an injury, but even though he has been fine for the past three months, apparently the creative has “Nothing for him”, and that has kept his return on the side burner. Christian can make all the difference in the WWE, as he is entertaining and is grossly under rated. Come Extreme Rules, Christian can make his return as a heel, by interfering in the main event match in some type, thus getting into the mix of things right off the bat. Christian deserves a run as the WWE/World champion, and I hope that comes true soon.
2. Dean Ambrose wining the United States title
Dean Ambrose is arguably the best performer in the WWE at the moment, and is hands down the best performer in The Shield. This Sunday, he faces Kofi Kingston for the United States title. I could not think of a reason why WWE would give Kofi the title, taking it off of Antonio Cesaro, but when you think of the long run, having a Kofi – Ambrose feud would make more sense than a Cesaro – Ambrose feud, and thus, gives one reason why the creative might have given Kofi the belt. Although that might not be entirely true, it all works out if Dean Ambrose captures the United States title, and brings another piece of gold to the faction. Dean is an outstanding performer, and seeing him as the US Champion would make perfect sense.
1. Ryback winning the WWE title
And at number 1 is the possibility of Ryback defeating John Cena for the WWE Title. Although I don’t think Ryback is ready to hold the WWE strap, one of the major ways to create ripples in the professional wrestling industry is to have Ryback go over John Cena for the WWE title, and perhaps, introduce Paul Heyman as the manager of Ryback during the match. That would make for some interesting storylines, along with Cena’s quest to gain back the WWE title through the Summer, which makes sense.
Those are my top five picks that would help the Extreme Rules PPV to become a success. Let us know what you think by commenting below, and give us your opinions about what might happen during the PPV.
