It’s been more than two decades since Undertaker first set foot in the squared circle for his first WrestleMania match. And over that period, he has managed to transform himself from just a mere midcarder to a class act that doesn’t have any replacement. He is simply the biggest draw whenever WWE prepares itself for the annual marvel and this year also Taker is back to defend his streak. a portion of the fans might be thinking about Taker retiring after that but the majority still believes that he has the gas left in him to push further. Lose or win, Taker has already left his mark in the history and there are a lot of small details and numbers that built up the two decade long streak. So here is a rundown through some of them.
#10 \"2\" - The Number of WrestleManias that Undertaker missed
A former WWE writer just went after JBL for his comments HERE
It might sound a bit surprising to know that he actually missed two Wrestle Manias. If he hadn’t we could’ve had 23-0 by now or maybe the streak wouldn’t have been alive in the first place.
Taker first missed Mania back in 1994 when he had to take some time off for surgery and he also did the same in 2000 which was also because of injury.
However, two is just a small number in terms of what he has achieved as no one else in WWE has made it past even the 20 mark when it comes to WrestleMania matches.
#9 Giant Gonzlez- Only opponent that Taker defeated via Disqualification
Undertaker’s streak is filled with some epic matches but there are certain ones from the lot which is not worth remembering.
And one of those came at WrestleMania 9. The event itself is considered as the worst WrestleMania ever put up by WWE and Taker’s match was a disaster as well. he had a small bout with Giant Gonzalez which ended when Gonzalez’s manager interfered and presented Taker with a DQ win.
It still remains as the only case from the 21 wins and this match only comes to relevance when the numbers are taken as it did nothing else for anyone.
#8 \"3\" - Title Wins
Taker’s streak itself is a big thing to be at stake, but in a rare three occasions, the stakes were kept higher by the introduction of championships into the mix.
The first came in WrestleMania 13 where he defeated Sycho Sid for the WWE Championship. The next one came a decade later against Batista where Taker took the World Heavyweight title away from the Animal.
The following year, he took out Edge to win the same title and wasn’t involved in title match at WrestleMania ever since that.
#7 \"3\" - Show Stopping matches
Taker is arguably the biggest name that WrestleMania could offer but it’s surprising how rarely he closed the show.
He only did it thrice in his career and the first two came in title matches. He headlined with Sycho Sid at WrestleMania 13 and did the same with Edge on WrestleMania 24.
His last show stopping match came against Shawn Michaels where Mr. WrestleMania put his career on the line only to see Taker end it.
#6 \"340.08\" minutes- The Time hes been in the ring at WrestleMania
The streak maybe something which spans over two decades but Taker has only spent near five hours for his WrestleMania matches.
Fans familiar with the Indy matches which spans over hours wouldn’t be impressed with this stat but for a WWE fan that rarely see something stretched to one hour, this is big enough.
And since Taker is not as fit as those youngsters who get it out in the Indy’s its certainly something worth being proud of.
#5 \"8\" - Number of Stipulation matches in the streak
Gimmick matches are not an isolated thing when it comes to the Undertaker fans. They are well aware of the back yard of Taker and the matches he is comfortable with.
And in the streak there have been 8 matches which were added on with extra stipulations.
Sycho Sid, Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels took Undertaker in No disqualification matches. While Big Boss Man and Triple H had Hell in a Cell matches with the Phenom. Triple H also had a No hold Barred match with Taker alongside Edge while Mark Henry had the only Casket match in the streak.
#4 \"12\" - The Number of World Champions that fell to Takers streak
World Champion is always considered as a big deal in WWE and once you beat them you are something in the business. However, Taker and his streak are simply bigger and he has ran through 12 world champions to keep his streak intact.
Kevin Nash, Sycho Sid, Kane, Triple H, Ric Flair, Big Show, Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Batista, Edge, Shawn Michaels and CM Punk come under that list.
And this year, Brock Lesnar could well be added to that making it World Champions 0- Taker-13.
#3 Triple H had the most attempts in breaking the streak
Not much surprise here since we all know Triple H as an influential figure backstage. He has had three WrestleMania matches with Taker in the course of the streak and failed miserably in each one of them.
The first one came in WrestleMania X-7 which extended Taker’s streak to 9-0, the next came in WrestleMania XXVII which was a no holds barred match.
The last match between the two came at WrestleMania XXVIII which was a Hell in a Cell match. Kane and Shawn Michaels closely follows Triple H with two matches each.
#2 WrestleMania 21- When the attempt to break the Streak started
There was no plans whatsoever for the WWE to let Taker have an unbeaten run and no one noticed that he had been undefeated till he raised his ten figures after making it 10-0 by defeating Ric Flair in X-8.
But it took another three years for WWE to realize that the Streak is something which they could bank on and immediately put Randy Orton into the mix as a superstar who wanted to end Taker’s streak.
it was the first time his streak was incorporated into the angle and we could say that this was the time when people actually realized that Taker had something like this and then everyone wanted a shot at it.
#1 21-0
This is the number that makes the Streak worth it and it obviously is the top stat when it comes to WrestleMania and Undertaker.
Every year, the fans comes with the expectation of the number being increased on the left hand side, while Taker’s opponents will be aiming to start the count on the right.
It means a lot to everyone in the business and from Jimmy Snuka to CM Punk, Taker went through 21 great matches which will see its latest addition on April 6.
Will Brock Lesnar be the man to break the streak or will he fall as another victim to the Phenom? Its this curiosity and novelty that makes the streak so special.
