The House of the United States government played host to three hours of non-stop, hard-hitting action as the WWE Superstars put up another great show at the first ever Capitol Punishment Pay-Per-View extravaganza. Here’s what the fans in attendance had the delight of watching at this great event:
1. John Cena def. R-Truth (retains WWE Championship):
R-Truth’s new attitude and his newfound mean-streak were not enough to defeat John Cena and his host of fans from the Cenation on this night, as his very actions became his undoing in his first big title shot. Confidence was never a problem for R-Truth, who came strutting into the ring with Cena’s title belt (which he had taken with him on Raw). From the beginning of the match, the contest was intense and highly competitive, and on some occasions, the challenger seemed to be getting the upper hand on the Champ. And just when Truth seemed to have the match won with an axe kick, he tried to repeat his actions by picking on a young member of the audience and the kid turned the tables for him by splashing his face with a glassful of soda. A dazed R-Truth entered the ring to find himself inside an Attitude Adjustment, and the denizens of the Cenation were exhilarated to see their Comander-in-Chief stand tall over his adversary. A really brave challenge put up by a highly competitive challenger, but didn’t go the way he wanted it to.
2. Randy Orton def. Christian (retains World Heavyweight Championship):
If Christian was frustrated at not being able to beat Orton earlier, after Capitol Punishment he must be mulling ways to commit suicide. Because not only was his loss unfair, but he got smacked by the World Heavyweight Championship as a measure of retribution for his actions on SmackDown. The match was typical of the rivalry between the two competitors. Captain Charisma was giving it his 110% and pulling out every move in his Arsenal, only to see The Viper turn the tables on him and refusing to go down. And at the end, Orton struck with a lightning fast RKO, and the referee made the three count, but he missed the fact that Christian’s foot was underneath the ropes (which should have forced the ref to break the count). Christian will not be letting this go, and the absence of a convincing victory makes it obvious that these two gladiators are gonna go toe-to-toe at least one more time.
3. Alex Riley def. The Miz:
Alex Riley made full use of the opportunity to establish himself as the newest WWE superstar of the block with a resounding victory over his former mentor, The Miz. Even after surviving two near-count-outs, Riley was almost put out of the equation by Miz and the sycophant Micheal Cole, who handed a steel briefcase to the former WWE Champion. But before Miz could nail his former apprentice with the belt, he was spotted by the referee who stopped the attack. The distraction allowed Riley to capitalise with a thunderous DDT to get the pinfall.
4. Ezekiel Jackson def. Wade Barrett (New Intercontinental Champion):
The Personification of Domination finally got his retribution on Wade Barrett as he defeated his adversary and former Corre teammate to win his first intercontinental championship. Ever since Barrett excommunicated Jackson from the Corre, the 300 pound powerhouse had been out for revenge, but it was always delayed by the numbers game. But after Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater had also had too much of Barrett, they left the former bare-knuckles fighting champ to defend the title on his own. And once the match started, the intense hatred between the two rocked the ring. After licking out of the devastating Wasteland, Jackson unleashed a series of crippling body slams on his opponent, finally forcing Barrett to submit to a modified Torture Rack.
5. CM Punk def. Rey Mysterio:
CM Punk closed the latest chapter in the long-time storied rivalry between himself and Rey Mysterio with a resounding win over the master of the 619. Even though Stone Cold Steve Austin had made it sure that there would be no interference from the Nexus, Punk was not short of confidence heading into the match. The two extremely talented athletes fought tooth and nail in an intense contest, which culminated when Punk caught Mysterio while he was trying to do the 619, and hit him with the GTS. After his victory, the Second City Saviour left a cryptic message to the WWE Universe, saying that he was about to do ‘the most honest thing that the WWE has ever seen’. What might that mean?
6. Dolph Ziggler def. Kofi Kingston (New United States Champion):
Vickie Guerrero proved her worth as Dolph Ziggler’s business associate once more, as she paved the way for his first ever United States championship reign. Kingston and Ziggler, who had earlier founght on numerous occasions for the Intercontinental title, showcased their amazing talents once more in an extremely competitive match. But an eye gouge from Vickie allowed Ziggler to capitalise with the debilitating Sleeper Hold, causing Kingston to pass out and lose the title.
7. Alberto Del Rio def. Big Show:
Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez just found yet another reason to brag, as Del Rio scored a victory over the largest athlete in the world.
The match seemed to be Del Rio’s demise from the very beginning, as Big Show attacked his opponent even before the opening bell, dragging him to the ring and tossing him into the barriers. The angry giant, still fuming at being hit by one of Del Rio’s luxury rides (which put him on the shelf for weeks), had only one thing in mind: incapacitate his opponent. But things took a surprising turn when the world’s strongest man, Mark Henry made a surprise sneak attack on Big Show, splashing him through the announce table. This allowed the Mexican Aristocrat to unleash his fury on Show’s knee, leaving him crippled. Show still agreed to compete in the match, but given his condition, it was just a matter of moments before Del Rio locked in a vicious submission hold on Big Show’s knee, rendering the giant unable to compete any further.
8. Evan Bourne def. Jack Swagger:
In the bonus match of the night, the High Flying Evan ‘Air’ Bourne defeated the All-American American for the third straight time, fuelling further the rage of his adversary. The match was a treat to watch, with the two competitors showing extreme athleticism and endurance. In the end, Swagger dodged the Shooting Star press to lock in the ankle lock, which was countered by a lightning-quick Bourne into a three-count.
