Extreme Rules PPV ended on a high note with a surprising return and quality matches. The one low point of the entire PPV can be said as the ineffective booking of Charlotte vs Natalya match. But, other than that, everything else delivered beyond the expectations that fans have had for the event.
Well, having said that, it is safe to say that Extreme Rules was extreme. From Thumbtacks to chair shots everything a wrestling fan might expect was involved in the PPV. But, there are few moments that brand itself in our minds for its extremity. Here are 10 such moments from this PPV.
#10 Corbin’s low blow
Baron Corbin did something unthinkable at Extreme Rules. Corbin had both the size and strength advantage over The Show Off, but Ziggler’s speed and agility left him reeling. To neutralize Ziggler’s fiery offense Corbin did a dastardly thing. – he went low.
As Ziggler aimed a Superkick, Corbin ducked under it and delivered a vicious low blow to cripple the Show Off. He then picked up the fallen Ziggler to show him his End of Days.
#9 Fatal 4 Way Powerbomb
The IC match was nowhere near extreme as the other matches. But, it was one of the best matches of the night. The four men showcased their in-ring prowess to awe the WWE audience in a stellar bout.
Amidst all the struggles and pinfall breakups, one thing stands clearly in our mind. The powerbomb the Swiss Superman delivered. Owens went to top rope during the match, but Zayn and Miz cut him off and attempted to Superflex him. But, Cesaro had other plans, he joined the mix to deliver a vicious powerbomb to both Zayn and Miz, and thus in turn delivering Owens the Superflex.
#8 Rusev’s aggression
Nothing could be more memorable as Rusev dominance in this match. Near the end of the bout, Rusev delivered a vicious Military Press Slam by lifting Kalisto from the top rope and slamming him into the apron. He ignored the pleadings of the referee and dragged Kalisto, who was being tended on the apron by medical personals, inside.
He then went on to apply a nasty Accolade to the obviously hurt Kalisto and picked up the win. His aggression and disregard for Kalisto’s welfare earned him a tremendous heat.
#7 Natalya’s German Suplex
Whatever the result maybe, there is one thing you can’t take away from this match. This match was a technical classic. The numerous submission holds applied and the way each women fought out of them was brilliant.
But, it was not the technical prowess that raised eyebrows. It was the vicious German Suplex delivered by Nattie that surprised many fans. Even though Charlotte delivered a powerbomb earlier, German Suplex stood in mind because rarely any female wrestler uses it. If we are not careful, Nattie might just turn into a female beast. Watch below how vicious the German Suplex is.
#6 Jericho canes Ambrose
Jericho’s brilliance as a hell knows no bounds. And this match was the perfect setting for him to unleash that brilliance. His heel antics were on top form Extreme Rules. Though he initially acted like a coward and tried to get of the Asylum cell, he pounced on Ambrose once he had him in his mercy.
As Ambrose prevented Jericho from climbing out, both batted on the top of the cage and Jericho got the upper hand. He soon retrieved the Kendo stick hanging there and started delivering mighty blows to Ambrose on the top of the Cell. The fact that he had his annoying smile on his face at that time made it look more extreme. If not for the sheer number of extreme moments, this would have well been in top 3.
#5 Roman rages
Roman Reigns’ love for destruction knows no bounds. In midway through his match with Styles, Roman was limping after Styles did a shoulder tackle to counter his Superman Punch. Roman rolled outside and Styles followed him with vicious running knees on the apron.
But, Roman soon recovered and caught Styles. And his power came into play. Roman just relentlessly bashed Styles into the barricade and ring apron with no regard to Styles’ welfare. He just tossed Styles around like rag doll until his anger had subsided.
There were few table moments too where Roman took out Styles through multiple tables, but with the way this rivalry has gone those were minor things.
#4 Taken to the Straps
It is safe to say that Ambrose and Jericho stole the show with their hatred for each other. At some point in their match, Jericho got hold of the strap hanging above and went on to deliver a lashing to Ambrose. Jericho being his heel self, started mocking Ambrose after that.
Soon the tides turned and Ambrose delivered his own set of lashings. But the difference was that Ambrose atleast had something on his upper body to protect him from the sting of the straps. Poor Jericho was bare-bodied and the sounds the straps made as they made contact with Jericho’s bare skin made people cringe.
#3 Styles snaps
Towards the end of the main event, Roman’s resilience frustrated Styles to no end. Two consecutive Styles Clash (one on chair for good measure) didn’t put Roman out as he barely stayed in match. The frustration took its toll on Styles and he just snapped.
Styles took a steel chair and started delivering a barrage of chair shots to both Usos and Reigns relentlessly. Styles’ rage and frustration was evident on his face as he viciously attacked The Bloodline all on his own. The crowd went nuts as he seemed to go on forever.
#2 Ambrose gets gutted
Well, nothing can take the top 2 positions apart from this match. The first ever Asylum match was just that great. The 2x4 barbwire bat, made famous by Hardcore Legend Mick Foley, came into play at the later stages of the match.
At the ending stage of the match, Chris Jericho used the dreaded barbwire bat and gutted Dean Ambrose. He delivered three vicious blows using the bat and the anguish on Ambrose’s face told the fans how painful that could be
#1 The Thumbtacks
If anything can top this list of Extreme Moments, then this is it. Dean Ambrose countered a Codebreaker from Jericho and slammed him right into the Thumbtacks that were spread near. The Thumbtacks embedded themselves in Jericho’s blood and bones, causing him to scream in agony.
Earlier, Ambrose revealed what was hidden inside the not-so-intimidating plastic bucket to Jericho’s horror. When Jericho saw it was the Thumbtacks his face turned pale. They tried to use the spread thumbtacks for their purpose as they traded control back and forth. In the end, Ambrose planted Jericho on them and followed it up with a Dirty Deeds to emerge victorious of the first ever Asylum Match.
