Extreme Rules 2013, the PPV following Wrestlemania did more than enough justice and was hands down a better event than Wrestlemania 29. With too many hyped matches, there was a slight sense of disbelief, with the fear that matches won’t live up to their expectation.
The matches involving the Shield were the ones most of us were looking forward to as this group have been delivering in every match of theirs. But the ‘best match of the night’ title sadly does not belong to them. Though I was quite pleased with the results of their matches, I for one felt that the Shield lacked their usual chemistry and one reason for that could be due to their separation. Despite that, they put up a great match which would have made it to the top of my list if the Steel Cage match between Triple H and Brock Lesnar had not taken place.
Frankly speaking, I wasn’t a fan of this match and considered it a needless bout between the two. Though the real reason for the match seemed more convincing, which is Lesnar’s establishment as a monster heel, there was a feeling that this match was going to be as dull as their previous two encounters and the moment the match started, I knew WWE was going to prove me wrong.

There was drama right from the beginning as Triple H didn’t wait for his entrance and started his offence outside the cage. He attacked Lesnar from behind and put him inside the cage. Once the match officially began, there was a whole new story that was going to be told. After a series of offensive moves from the Game, Lesnar managed to fight back and accidentally injured his knee in the process.
A lot of credit has to be given to Lesnar and Paul Heyman for the way they sold Triple H’s move. Though Hunter did enough to carry himself along, the way Lesnar sold his knee injury was great to watch. Paul Heyman interfering in the match was a bit unacceptable as the cage was set up in the first place to avoid any sort of interference. The moment of the match came when Triple H took out the sledge hammer.
I have to say the sledge hammer angle of the match was extremely smart from the WWE. Triple H’s identity as the cerebral assassin is the sledge hammer and the way it was camouflaged within the Steel Cage was simply one of the smartest moves I have seen in sometime. Lesnar on the other hand was at his best. The sadistic smile that he had on his face made him look more like the animal WWE wants him to be. To say the least, this was one of the better matches I have seen in a while.
The ending was perfect with Lesnar picking up his much required victory as WWE will now push Lesnar as a dominant heel force in the company who will look credible threat in any feud that he is put into.
