With only a week left after this for SummerSlam, RAW had the responsibility of updating the match card. With some intense brawls, WWE has managed to bring enough progress into the storylines and also added two new matches to the card.
But under the pressure of storyline build-up, the creative team forgot that this was a wrestling show. The show did not have a decent wrestling match with the entire show plagued with pointless matches that did not seem to impress the fans one bit.
Anyway, like always, here are the biggest Flops of the show last night:
1. Mark Henry vs Ryback
It has become a routine for WWE to have matches that end in a count out. Fandango looks like the mascot of intentional count outs, but he now has competition in the form of Ryback.
The much hyped Wrestlemania 29 rematch that commentators were overselling turned out to be a dud match. Mark Henry and Ryback exchanged a few shots and the latter had had enough.
Ryback got out of the ring to get some air and decided it was time for him to feed on something edible. What was the point of this match? I guess even the creative team is struggling to figure that out.
2. Wade Barrett
If you thought losing matches was the worst thing for a jobber, think again. Wade Barrett took jobbing to a whole new level when he came out as a barber to give Daniel Bryan a shave.
Who would have ever thought that we will see Barrett in a position like this? From being a World Heavyweight Champion, Barrett’s now been reduced to a mere joker in the ring. Maybe Barrett’s done something that’s angered WWE officials and hence he’s being given such bad TV time as a punishment.
3. Fandango
Does anyone remember that Fandango defeated Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania? Well, I certainly don’t.
It is now obvious that Fandango won’t be getting any sort of role in SummerSlam except for the pre-show, which mostly has meaningless matches. But frankly, Fandango looked hot after his Wrestlemania win and has come down a long way to becoming a glorified jobber as he lost to Kofi Kingston last night on RAW.
4. Rob Van Dam
Just a month back, Rob Van Dam was the hottest star in WWE. His return at Money in the Bank had everyone pumped up. A lot was expected of RVD after his MITB match and all that has just vanished now.
Though he had a convincing victory over Alberto Del Rio this week and a great Triple Threat match at SmackDown last week, RVD is like a floating mass that is just moving along the stream without any direction. It is high time WWE put him in a feud at least post SummerSlam as chances of him being in the PPV card look bleak.
5. The Crowd
Frankly, it was one of the worst RAW crowds in recent times. They seemed very much occupied with themselves as what was happening in the ring didn’t interest them. Though there were a few chants here and there, the crowd, for the majority of the show, remained completely silent.
The Rhodes/Sandow segment gave me a feeling that the arena was empty. The crowd seemed oblivious to Kofi’s return, as if they never recognized him. The Wyatt Family promo made the crowd feel depressed I presume, as they remained dumbstruck by their actions.
Though a small part of the crowd reminded others to cheer for Bryan and Kane, and also to boo Cena, they didn’t manage to give out any sort of energy to the wrestlers inside the ring.
