WWE Hell in a Cell 2020 saw former best friends Sasha Banks and Bayley engage in a brutal title match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. The two friends-turned-foes arguably delivered the best match of the night.
It would be safe to say that Banks and Bayley did justice to the entire build-up to their much-anticipated match at the recently concluded pay-per-view.
At Hell in a Cell, both Banks and Bayley pushed each other to their limits, and their highly-entertaining narration kept the fans hooked onto the action. This match had several incredible spots.
The closing moments of the battle saw Banks wrap a chair around Bayley’s neck before forcing the latter to submit via the Banks Statement. The constant stomping on the other end of the chair also helped Banks in successfully forcing Bayley into the submission.

In this article, we will take a look at five reasons why Sasha Banks defeated Bayley to become the new SmackDown Women’s Champion at Hell in a Cell 2020.
#5 Sasha Banks’ unique opportunity to make history in her WWE career
The rivalry between Sasha Banks and Bayley was in the making for more than a year. In recent months, both Superstars worked very well as a tag team and even got their hands on the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. This also allowed both Banks and Bayley to hold two titles simultaneously.
Unfortunately, their fairy-tale involving all the gold came to an end when they lost their tag team titles to Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax. After that match, Bayley attacked Banks, and the two have been feuding ever since.
The champion took every chance to blindside Banks and attack her. She even refused to sign the contract, but Banks was determined to take the gold away from Bayley -- the one thing that mattered the most for her former best friend.
While the WWE Universe were expecting Sasha Banks to betray Bayley, that’s not how things transpired. Instead, the creative turned Banks into a babyface who would then have a chance to become the SmackDown Women’s Champion for the first time in her WWE career. And what could have been more poetic than Banks beating none other than Bayley for this iconic moment of her career?
From the in-ring action to the drama surrounding this storyline, everything about their Hell in a Cell match was very well done. In the end, Banks picked a deserved victory, and it will now be interesting to see what’s in store for the newly crowned champion on WWE SmackDown.
#4 There is nothing else left for Bayley to achieve on WWE SmackDown
While Sasha Banks had an opportunity to go after a huge personal achievement in WWE, Bayley already has several of those accolades to her name. In fact, at the Hell in a Cell PPV, she lost her SmackDown Women’s Championship after a historic 380-day reign. Not to forget, the same run with the gold also saw her become the first women’s Grand Slam Champion as well as the Triple Crown Champion in WWE.
In her memorable SmackDown Women’s Championship reign in WWE, Bayley had her fair share of highs and lows. She turned heel and shocked the Universe and then evolved her gimmick from a cowardly villain to a brutal one. She also locked horns with almost everyone on the Blue brand and went on to become one of the most dominant women’s champions in the promotion’s history.
Given the above-mentioned facts, one can argue that there was nothing left for Bayley to achieve on WWE SmackDown. In fact, any further extension of her title reign would have made her extremely monotonous. Therefore, it was a good decision to take the title off of her and put it on Sasha Banks, who is set to script a new chapter in WWE.
#3 New title feuds on WWE SmackDown
Ever since Bayley became the WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, she had an extended run as a single most-dominant Superstar in the women’s division of the Blue brand. She was involved in a title defences against the likes of Naomi, Lacey Evans, Nikki Cross, among many others.
Considering the fact that Cross and Bayley were engaged in title matches countless times, it was pretty evident that no more interesting feuds were left for Bayley.
This had a huge rusk of making the SmackDown Women’s Championship mundane and WWE had to take a quick action. Now that the Blue brand has a new champion, we are bound to get a lot of fresh title feuds. In the end, it will give more opportunities to other Superstars backstage as the creative will wait for their next breakthrough talent.
Sasha Banks is a talented Superstar who can be trusted with a credible title run. In the meantime, she can take up on new challenges and hopefully, the likes of Bianca Belair and more will get an opportunity to compete for the gold. This will essentially elevate the entire SmackDown women’s division – something that the show desperately needs at the moment.
#2 Sasha Banks vs. Asuka at WWE Survivor Series
While Sasha Banks’ title win at Hell in a Cell will work wonders for SmackDown women’s division, the creative needed this victory for another huge reason. This year’s WWE Survivor Series is right around the corner. It would be epic to see RAW Women’s Champion Asuka and SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks locking horns at the battle of brands.
Most probably, we will also see the NXT Women’s Champion involved in this match. That would be Io Shirai unless she loses her title in the next four weeks. Irrespective of those circumstances, it would be great to see both Banks and Asuka square off. Don’t get me wrong, Bayley is a brilliant inside the ring. However, if she were to face Asuka, the result would have been quite predictable.
Not to forget, it was Asuka who took the RAW Women’s Championship from Banks a couple of months ago. Their meeting in the coming weeks and much-anticipated altercations will certainly entertain the WWE Universe. Moreover, Banks deserves to lead the SmackDown Women’s division in the last big WWE pay-per-view of the year.
#1 Extended WWE title feud between Sasha Banks and Bayley
The only drawback from this feud between Sasha Banks and Bayley was the fact that build-up until the moment of betrayal was dragged for far too long. Given their history as well as the amount of time that WWE invested in showing both these Superstars as best friends and then brutal enemies, one can’t be blamed for expecting that there’s more to his rivalry.
We could see Sasha Banks and Bayley involved in an extended feud over the coming months. It will be unfortunate for Banks to lose the title without being involved in a few good title feuds. And one of them should certainly be with her former best friend. Moreover, Banks should probably be booked more as an anti-hero and not as a complete babyface in WWE.
Both Banks and Bayley proved today they would deliver great matches and deserve the grandest stage, i.e. WrestleMania or even Royal Rumble for that matter. These two WWE Superstars are having the run of their career, and it would be criminal to not capitalise on the potential that this storyline has to offer.
WWE only have to ensure that narrative doesn’t turn boring after a few weeks. Let’s hope that Banks has a compelling run as the new SmackDown Women’s Champion – something that she has deserved for so long.
