CM Punk and Dean Ambrose with the Money in the Bank briefcase

WWE introduced the unique Money in the Bank concept way back in the year 2005 as a way to skyrocket a promising superstar's career. Usually six or seven superstars compete in a ladder match to win the Money in the Bank briefcase and stand a chance to change to their lives. In its initial years, the match used to take place at WrestleMania. However, looking at the success rate of this match, the company decided to establish a pay-per-view with the same name in 2010.

Very few people may remember that 'Money in the Bank' was even the name of current U.S. President Donald Trump's theme song, when he was a part of WWE. Over the years, the Money in the Bank match has witnessed drastic changes, be it the color of the briefcase or the number of the superstars participating in the match. During the time of the brand split, the company even scheduled two Money in the Bank matches.

From the year 2017, Vince McMahon decided to have 2 ladder matches every year, one for the men and one for the women.

All the six men had a grueling encounter before the Rated-R superstar Edge walked out with the coveted briefcase thanks to his chair strike to Chris Benoit in the final moments. He held his contract for a long time and once he was even forced to defend his contract against Matt Hardy in a ladder match on RAW.

However, despite all the problems he had, Edge successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract against John Cena at the New Year's Revolution. Currently, Edge has retired from professional wrestling due to his injury woes. He appears on the WWE Network with his friend Christian as the co-host of the “The Edge and Christian show”.

Rob Van Dam won the 2nd Money in the Bank ladder match in WWE history at WrestleMania 22. He emerged victorious by overcoming the likes of Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin, the legend Ric Flair, Finlay and Bobby Lashley in the multi-man bout.

This was the first time that an ECW star had won the briefcase and also, RVD became the first man to ever schedule a time and a date to cash in his contract. It was at ECW's own pay-per-view, One Night Stand, where RVD won the WWE title.

CM Punk made headlines by becoming the first ever WWE superstar to win two consecutive Money in the Bank ladder matches, when he walked out of WrestleMania as Mr. Money in the Bank in 2008 and 2009.

In 2008, he held the contract for 92 days before finally exercising his right and winning the WWE title from Edge. Next in 2009, he took the title from the Charismatic Enigma, Jeff Hardy after a successful cash-in.

Punk even had a 5-star match with John Cena at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in 2011. However, he soon left the company because of creative differences and then never returned.

The Real American Jack Swagger shocked the WWE Universe by winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI. This was the final time that the traditional ladder match took place at the Show of Shows as WWE initiated a pay-per-view with the same name in the same year.

Hence, Swagger never got the right amount of spotlight and ultimately, his cash-in took place in a rushed manner. Just 5 days after winning the contract, Swagger cashed it in and won the title from Chris Jericho.

#8 Daniel Bryan

Bryan successfully cashed in his contract against Mark Henry in November 2011. However, that cash-in was reverted and Daniel was handed his contract back. Just a few weeks later, he became the champion by defeating the new champion Big Show.

Ziggler had quite a run with his briefcase with the #Heel being forced to put his contract on the line multiple times.

He once defended his contract in the first ever career vs contract match versus Chris Jericho on RAW. Next, he faced John Cena in a ladder match at TLC. Ziggler retained the briefcase on both the occasions.

Dolph pulled off one of the greatest cash-ins in WWE history when he won the World Heavyweight Championship from Alberto Del Rio.

John Cena won the first ever 5-man Money in the Bank ladder match in 2012 when he beat Chris Jericho, The Miz, Kane and Big Show. The reason why only 5 men took part in the elusive match was that only former WWE Champions present on the RAW roster were allowed to compete in the match.

Nevertheless, the winner of this match failed to have a successful cash-in as Cena's overconfidence hurt him real bad. Inspite of cashing in at the perfect moment, The Cenation Leader instead pre-announced his Money in the Bank cash-in for RAW 1000. Big Show interfered in that match and caused a disqualification finish, making the Prototype the first ever man to lose his Money in the Bank contract without winning the WWE Championship.

John Cena made his surprise return at WrestleMania 35 as the Doctor of Thuganomics.

Sandow held the Money in the Bank briefcase for 106 days before he showed up on RAW to cash-in his contract over John Cena. However, Sandow surprisingly lost the match by pin-fall and became the first man to lose his Money in the Bank cash-in match via pin-fall.

He competed in Impact Wrestling for a short period of time before taking a break from professional wrestling and focusing on his acting career.

#14 Seth Rollins

Seth Freaking Rollins

The man who had the best run as Mr. Money in the Bank in WWE history and the reigning WWE Universal Champion, Seth Rollins had won the ladder match of 2014. Both the brands were unified that year and we saw a new golden colored briefcase suspended above the ring.

The Architect had defeated Kofi Kingston, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger, Rob Van Dam and Dean Ambrose in the 23-minutes long match. He became the first man to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract in the main event of WrestleMania when he did so during the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31.

An untimed injury to Rollins cut short his first reign as the world champion but the Kingslayer has never looked back since then and is the current Universal Champion. He is set to put his title on the line against AJ Styles at the 2019 edition of Money in the Bank.

Dean Ambrose won the 2016 Money in the Bank ladder match by defeating Sami Zayn, Cesaro, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens and Alberto del Rio. The former United States Champion, Kalisto was even supposed to be a part of this match but the plans were changed at the last minute.

The Lunatic Fringe waited only 57 minutes before deciding to cash-in his Money in the Bank contract. It was after the night's main event between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins that the Ironman of WWE came out and just stole the title from Rollins who had achieved it just a few moments before Ambrose's arrival.

Unfortunately, Dean Ambrose is no longer a part of WWE as the Kingpin of WWE decided against signing a new contract with the company. However, his new video where he is portraying himself as Jon Moxley has gone viral on social media of late.

Taking the next step in the Women's Revolution, WWE decided to book the first ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match in the year 2017. Carmella, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Tamina and Natalya were the five participants of this match which saw James Ellsworth win the match for Carmella.

However, a rematch was announced soon for SmackDown Live yet The Princess of Staten Island managed to retain her briefcase. The NXT graduate held the contract for 287 days before successfully cashing it in and emerging as the new SmackDown Women's Champion.

Carmella's reign as champion drew immense amount of criticism towards her but she had improved a lot both inside the ring and on the mic. She is all set to fight for the Money in the Bank contract once again on 19th May, 2019.

The Lone Wolf could not win the WWE title in his cash-in match

The Lone Wolf Baron Corbin had defeated AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Dolph Ziggler, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in the SmackDown exclusive Money in the Bank ladder match of 2017. Corbin was set to receive a huge push from the Creative team. However, his bad behavior moved him to the doghouse and he lost his cash-in match to Jinder Mahal of all men!

The former Golden Gloves champion then took a pinfall defeat at the hands of John Cena and became a member of the lower mid card. He has never returned to the main event picture ever since 2017. Though he had a lengthy run as the Acting General Manager of RAW, he failed to impress the WWE Universe.

He will compete in the upcoming Money in the Bank ladder match along with the likes of Drew McIntyre, Ricochet, Braun Strowman, Randy Orton, Andrade, Ali and the Intercontinental Champion, Finn Balor.

Braun Strowman became the first man to cash in his Money in the Bank contract inside Hell in a Cell

Braun Strowman was perhaps the worst booked Mr. Money in the Bank in WWE history. The Monster Amongst Men had a ton of momentum by his side and even the fans backed him a lot yet he could not cash in his contract successfully.

It is surprising to note that the superstars who were way smaller in size than Strowman were victorious in their cash-in matches but the Monster failed. In a first, the cash-in match ended in a double count-out when both the champion Roman Reigns and Strowman could not answer the referee, Mick Foley's call inside Hell in a Cell in 2018.
