What’s the story?
WWE Hall of Famer Charles Wright performed as The Godfather and Papa Shango at a recent AIW event.
Apparently, while performing under his Papa Shango persona, he cast a vomit-inducing spell on an AIW stable.
In case you didn’t know…
Charles Wright is well-known for portraying several characters in the WWE, including Kama, Kama Mustafa, Sir Charles, Papa Shango and The Godfather.
The Papa Shango persona is regarded as one of the eeriest gimmicks in professional wrestling history, considering that Shango has a history of casting voodoo spells on his opponents, causing them to vomit or be incapacitated in some form/manner as a result of the spell.
The heart of the matter
It was on the April 20th AIW show that Charles Wright was booked as both The Godfather and Papa Shango at the event.
Wright’s appearances as The Godfather as well as Papa Shango are both said to have been positively received from the fans in attendance.
However, the fans erupted with what’s being lauded as the loudest reaction of the show, when Papa Shango cast a voodoo spell on The Production (a stable comprising 4 performers)—causing The Production to vomit “The Black Ooze”.
Fans can check out a few photographs from Papa Shango’s dominant appearance and its aftermath, below—
What’s next?
Charles Wright presently continues to make sporadic appearances on the independent professional wrestling circuit.
Wright, despite being a semi-retired pro-wrestling performer, still garners incredible reactions from the fans whenever he chooses to compete inside the squared circle—as evidenced by the raucous reaction at the aforementioned AIW event.
Author’s take
Honestly speaking, the AIW show was absolutely wild, unpredictable, and truly entertaining.
It’s great to see that the younger demographic of professional wrestling fans who comprised the majority of the crowd at the show, are well aware of who Papa Shango is.
Love him or hate him, the Shango Tango never gets old.
