The blue brigade was in Ontario, California for another live event and it was everything you’d expect of it – a solid showing. The card featured the staple Live event matches that have been a norm in all SmackDown live events – a triple threat main event for the WWE title between AJ Styles, John Cena and Dean Ambrose, a tag team titles bout, the women featuring prominently in a tag team match and Orton and Wyatt continuing their warm up for No Mercy.
Here are the results from the show that was said to have had a low turnout:
1- Dolph Ziggler vs The Miz with Maryse (Non-title Match)
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
The Show Off and The A-Lister faced each other in a non-title bout and came out on top. The Miz-Ziggler rivalry has been one been one the more engaging feuds in the entire landscape of the WWE and the two are set to face each other in a Career vs Title match at No Mercy.
The match at the live event was a great precursor of the potential things to come. Will Ziggler resurrect his career and walk out with the title, or will he stamp his name as the greatest heel on the roster by ending Ziggler's WWE career? We’ll have to wait and watch.
Result- Dolph Ziggler def. The Miz in a non-title match
2- American Alpha and Hype Bros vs Ascension and The Vaudevillains (8-man tag team match)
The most over team on SmackDown live after the Tag team champions, American Alpha teamed up with the ever so charged-up Hype bros in a match against the neglected ones of the blue brand, Ascension and The Vaudevillians. Jason Jordan, Chad Gable, Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley picked up the win against the heels in a descent encounter.
Result- American Alpha and Hype Bros def. Ascension and The Vaudevillians
3- Apollo Crews vs Curt Hawkins
This was certainly a surprise for the fans as Curt Hawkins – who made his in-ring WWE return at last night’s live event in Las Vegas to beat Apollo Crews, was in action at the event. The tables turned in Crews' favour in Ontario as he defeated Hawkins and levelled the scores in the live event battle.
By the looks of it, Apollo Crews could be Hawkin’s first opponent upon his return to SmackDown Live.
Result- Apollo Crews def. Curt Hawkins
4- SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella vs Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Natalya (Handicap match)
The faces of the SmackDown Women’s Division, Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella beat the odds and came out on top against the heel trio of Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Natalya in a 3-2 handicap match. It should be noted here that Naomi wasn't part of the face team and took a night off.
Result- SD Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella def. Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Natalya
5- Baron Corbin vs Jack Swagger
The Lone Wolf took on familiar live event foe, the reformed All-American, Jack Swagger in one-on-one action. Corbin won the bout and dropped obvious hints on who’d eventually go over in their SmackDown Live feud that is set to culminate in a match at No Mercy.
Result- Baron Corbin def. Jack Swagger
6- Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt
The Viper got the better of The New Face Of Fear in front of the Ontario fans with the customary RKO Outta Nowhere. This match was short and sweet and was a crowd pleaser with Randy Orton doing his best at riling up the fans.
Result- Randy Orton def. Bray Wyatt via RKO
7- Kane vs Tyler Breeze
This was a walk in the park for the Big Red Machine as he squashed the life out of Prince Pretty in the ultra short match. Tyler Breeze has been demoted to near irrelevancy with his role as a self-obsessed and attractive jobber.
Result- Kane def. Tyler Breeze in a squash match
8- SmackDown Tag Team Champions Heath Slater and Rhyno vs Usos (Tag Team Championship match)
The popular champions picked up the win and retained their tag team title against the rejuvenated and repackaged team of the Usos. This match is another one of those preview bouts for the things to come at No Mercy, where Usos are rumoured to win the titles and ascend their heel turn.
Result- Heath Slater and Rhyno def. The Usos
9- AJ Styles vs John Cena vs Dean Ambrose (WWE World heavyweight Championship)
The main event of the evening was the tried and tested live event classic between AJ Styles, John Cena and Dean Ambrose. The new face that runs the place retained his title against the face that used to run the place, John Cena and the Lunatic Fringe, Dean Ambrose. The match was by far the best of the night and the same is expect of the three at the upcoming SmackDown Live PPV, No Mercy.
All in all, the live event was a solid outing for the stars of the SmackDown roster despite a relatively low attendance.
Result: AJ Styles def. John Cena and Dean Ambrose to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
