WWE returned to Chicago's United Center after 20 years for a stacked live event. Brock Lesnar and John Cena returned to the live event circuit as part of two big matches, one of which got a lot of brickbats from the fans in attendance.
A host of other entertaining matchups made for a solid card when all was said and done. Here are the results and highlights of the show:
#1 Woken Matt Hardy vs. Bray Wyatt
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Hardy and Wyatt continued their streak of opening house shows as the eccentric superstars put on a decent match to kick off the proceedings. A slow bout, to begin with, Hardy got the fans behind him with the delete chants and picked up the win with a Twist of Fate.
The Eater of Worlds and the Woken One could have put on a longer match though.
Hardy def. Wyatt
#2 Mustafa Ali vs. Jack Gallagher vs. Lince Dorado vs. Ariya Daivari (Fatal-4 Way)
The Cruiserweights took to the ring next in a frantic back-and-forth match. Hometown darling Mustafa Ali was obviously quite over and naturally picked up the win with the imploding 450 splash.
WWE usually books the 205 live stars in tag team matches in live events but made an exception keeping in mind the pop Ali would get a win in front his own folks.
Ali def. Gallagher, Dorado and Daivari
#3 Elias vs. Braun Strowman
El Vagabundo came out first and did his thing by trashing the Chicago native with a new single. Elias drew some nuclear heat at the drop of a hat and it set things up perfectly for Braun Strowman's entrance.
The Monster Among Men made his entrance to one of the biggest pops of the night and dispatched off of the Drifter with the Running Powerslam for the win.
Strowman def. Elias
#4 The Club and Heath Slater & Rhyno vs. The Miztourage vs. The Revival (8-Man Tag Team Match)
The undercard of the tag team division were all involved in a comedic tag team match. The classic heel-face dynamic and the amusing anecdotes courtesy of Slater and Ryhno made this a good match.
Gallows and Anderson got the win for their team with the Magic Killer.
The Club, Slater and Ryhno def. Dallas, Axel, Dawson and Wilder
#5 Brock Lesnar vs. Kane
The WWE Universal Champion returned and brutally squashed Kane, who himself returned to in-ring action last night at another live event against Braun Strowman.
Lesnar spent more time on the ramp than in the ring as all it took were three German Suplexes and an F5 in an under a minute to get the three-count over Kane.
While Paul Heyman looked ecstatic about his client's dominance, the Chicago fans felt cheated by the dampener of a match.
Lesnar def. Kane
#6 Sasha Banks, Bayley, Asuka and Mickie James vs. Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville (w/Paige)
A typical women's tag team match followed a disappointing match between the Demon and the Beast Incarnate. However, it had quite a few swerves until the finish came about.
Mickie James and Sasha Banks turned heel and deserted their teammates in the middle of the match.
Banks even locked in the Banks Statement on Asuka but the Empress of Tomorrow broke out of it and managed to submit Deville out with an armbar.
Banks, Bayley, Asuka and James def. Bliss, Jax, Rose, Deville
#7 Seth Rollins and Finn Balor vs. The Bar (Raw Tag Team Titles Match)
Finn Balor returned to live event action after no-showing at last night's event in Kalamazoo. The Demon King teamed up with the Architect and got a surprise tag team title shot.
Unsurprisingly though, Balor and Rollins were unable to get hold off the straps despite winning the match via DQ. Sheamus and Cesaro played this one like typical heels and retained their titles. Rollins and Balor were insanely over with the fans at The United Center in what ended up being the match of the night.
The Bar retained the raw tag team titles via DQ
#8 John Cena vs. Roman Reigns
Reigns and Cena went up against each other for the seventh time and the Big Dog notched up yet another clean victory over the Cenation leader, maintaining his spotless record against the 16-time WWE Champion in the process.
The slow main event had a decent finish but it couldn't stop the fans from chanting CM Punk's name. Cena putting over Reigns after the match didn't help WWE's cause either.
