In a week’s time, we will head on to the next WWE PPV, the Money in the Bank. MitB has been one of the most exciting PPVs in recent years, not only involving some of the best matches and storylines (Who can forget CM Punk’s ‘Summer of Punk’?), but also the Money in the Bank matches itself, which was created as an attraction match for WrestleMania, but since has taken a life of its own, being made into a Pay Per View. This year will be no different, as superstars ranging from Daniel Bryan to CM Punk will participate in the MitB match. But there is one superstar who is arguably the greatest performer in ladder matches. He is not new to the ‘big match’ situations, and has been an innovator when it comes to the ladder matches. He has been a part of some of the greatest ladder matches of all time, and one of the greatest tag teams in pro wrestling history! He is none other than ‘Captain Charisma’, Christian!
Often times, Christian is credited as the most under rated superstar in the history of the WWE, and it isn’t untrue. Christian has been in the business for nearly two decades, starting alongside his best friend Adam Copeland, aka Edge. The two soon teamed up together in the WWE and have had a great stint in the tag team division, and later went their separate ways to make their own careers. While Edge went on to achieve great success as a 11 time World champion, Christian, inspite of being the best heel in the WWE till ’05, was going nowhere, and he took this as a sign to try new things, and went to TNA where he was the franchise player till the end of his term. Christian returned to the WWE, and immediately achieved success by becoming the ECW World champion, and later went on to win the World Heavyweight championship after Edge retired. Ironically, Christian won his first World Heavyweight championship during a ladder match!
Does anyone consider Christian to be a legitimate threat to win the Money in the Bank briefcase come MitB PPV? Maybe not, but that doesn’t mean the WWE can’t take a chance with him. If Christian is successful in getting the brief case down at the PPV, it will not only usher a change in the WWE, but will also give a veteran his long due push as a main eventer. It is often claimed that Christian is seen as a veteran who will put the others over, but not as a guy who can carry the company on his shoulders, even though he has proven time and again that he can do that as well as anybody else. Christian at a point was so over in the WWE, that he was cheered by the ‘smarks’ even though he was the biggest heel in the company!
It all comes down to the Money in the Bank PPV to see where WWE wants to go with Christian. Ever since his return, Christian has been on fire, pinning the United States heavyweight champion, Dean Ambrose, and he also handed The Shield their second ever defeat as a trio via pinfall or submission. But before Christian made his return, he was put on the sidelines for a good amount of time as the creative had ‘nothing for him’. That is often a sign for the distrust a company has in an individual, although this time, it only proves the lack of knowledge on the creative’s part. But with Christian now being a part of a long term plan, it wouldn’t surprise many if he does indeed retrieve the Money in the Bank brief case and cashes it in successfully to win the WWE title soon. Things are getting interesting in the WWE Universe, and we will have to wait and see who will win the All – Stars Money in the Bank ladder match in a week’s time.
