What’s the story?
Former WWE Superstar AJ Lee has written her first novel, "Crazy Is My Superpower", and recently participated in an interview with The New York Post to promote the book’s release.
During the interview, Lee noted that during her time in the WWE she was kept off of television for several months for refusing to participate in a particular angle that she didn’t feel comfortable with.

In case you didn’t know...
AJ Lee was one of the best female talents on the roster during her time with the company, after defeating Kaitlyn at Payback for her first Divas Title back in 2013. She was one of the longest reigning Divas Champions of all time, before being defeated by Paige on Monday Night RAW the night after Wrestlemania 30, ending her historic 295-day streak as champion.
The heart of the matter
During Lee’s interview with the New York Post, it was noted that she was set to “take part in a series of goofy skits in which her character hallucinated, kissed a leprechaun and danced with dinosaurs from outer space.”
Both Lee and her mother suffer from bipolar II disorder, so the former Divas champ didn’t find it in good taste to participate. As a result, Lee was kept off television for several months:
“It was a joke, but, to me, it wasn’t something to laugh at. It’s hard to not think you’re alone in the world so it’s good to connect with other people who’ve faced the same issues.”
What’s next?
Lee’s days inside the squared circle are seemingly done after her spine injuries, but that can’t be said for her husband – now turned UFC fighter- CM Punk. Punk was a former WWE Champion who was one of the most beloved Superstars on the roster, however, he decided to walk away from the business after creative differences.
Although he’s stated before that he’ll ‘never wrestle again’, it’s tough to believe given the high demand for ‘The Cult Of Personality.’
Author’s take
The WWE needs to be a little more sensitive when it comes to the personal lives of their WWE Superstars. For Lee to be punished for refusing to be a part of something that has affected her family is just wrong.
The WWE tends to ignore how some of its angles may impact its Superstars’ lives, and a perfect example of this is when they allowed Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows to destroy a Dusty Rhodes themed teddy bear in front of his son Goldust.
While Goldust may have signed off on the angle, former WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes noted on Twitter that it broke his heart to see something like that on WWE television.
