WWE News: AJ Lee says that nobody in the WWE knew about her bipolar disorder

AJ Lee was the longest reigning Divas Champion in the WWE

What's the story?

Former WWE Superstar AJ Lee, as a part of the promotional tour for her memoir 'Crazy is my Superpower', participated in an interview with Dean Obeidallah. During this appearance, she revealed that nobody in the WWE knew that she was suffering from bipolar disorder.

In case you didn't know...

AJ Lee, real name April Mendez Brooks, wrestled in the WWE from 2009 to 2015. She held the Divas Title for a combined 406 days.

A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.

In 2014, she married former WWE Superstar-now-MMA fighter, CM Punk. According to her book, she left the company because of permanent damage to her cervical spine as well as the lawsuit against her husband.

The heart of the matter

During the interview, Brooks revealed that she got the 'crazy chick' gimmick in the WWE by luck. She said that her character let her be herself without revealing anything about her bipolar disorder.

“Kismet brought me to this character who was labelled the ‘Crazy Chick,'” AJ said. Nobody knew that I was suffering from Bipolar Disorder in real life. And so, it really felt like hiding in plain sight and letting all my aggression out.”

She further added that performing on TV helped her cope with her condition.

“If I didn’t have a healthy outlet for [my Bipolar Disorder], I would just be at home, breaking walls and doors. Let me be the worst version of myself on TV and make it fun. And people loved it. They were able to connect to that because they feel those flaws inside of them.”

What's next?

Brooks is touring heavily to promote her book, which has been well-received by the fans. The book covers everything from her struggles with mental illness, drug addiction, and poverty to her career in professional wrestling.

Author's take

Brooks coming out about her disorder is truly commendable and will serve as an inspiration to others who’re suffering from similar afflictions. The video below shows Brooks talking about Bipolar Disorder and the organisations that help people suffering from it.
