What’s the story?
I a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, WWE Hall of Famer and current RAW commentator Booker T opened up about his time in WCW and who believed so much in him to make him championship material.
In case you didn’t know…
Booker T won his first major championship in WCW during the controversial event called Bash at the Beach, where Hulk Hogan insulted Vince Russo in an infamous shoot promo. He even made history by winning the championship in the final broadcasted episode of Monday Nitro in 2001, back when Vince McMahon bought the rival company. It turns out that it was Russo's idea to push Booker T into the main event spot and make him world champion in the first place.

The heart of the matter
Vince Russo has been criticized many times for his controversial decisions such as the "Viagra on a Pole" match, but Booker T had nothing but great words about him. This is what he stated: "Vince Russo was the one who stuck up for me since the beginning and went up with the idea of making me world champion after what happened with Hogan. I wouldn't even be a one time champion if it weren't for him."
The five-time champion also admitted his insecurity, but when the night was over he was really happy with what went down: "I was afraid that the fans wouldn't accept a black man as a world champion, but I was happy to be proven wrong. When I pinned Jeff Jarrett and won the title, the place erupted and the rest is history."
What’s next?
Booker T is always training and has maintained a great shape, so an entry into the upcoming Royal Rumble match, as he teased on Twitter, wouldn't be so far stretched. The other 30 participants better be ready for him
Author’s take
Booker T is a legend of this business and deserved all the success he made thanks to the gifted wrestling abilities, charisma and great mic skills.
