What’s the story?
Braun Strowman took to his personal Instagram account this morning to thank the Big Show for the angle they executed last night on Raw. Show and Strowman faced off in the main event of the evening and the match ended in a no-contest after the ring imploded when Braun superplexed the Big Show off the top rope. In case you didn’t know....
Braun Strowman has been enjoying a rocket ride push since the brand split last summer. He’s faced several top opponents including Sami Zayn and most recently, Roman Reigns.
In addition to this, he’s had special in-ring moments with legends like Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels, the Undertaker, and Brock Lesnar. Strowman competed for team Raw at Survivor Series, was an entrant into the 2017 Royal Rumble, and a favourite in the Andre The Giant Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33.
Strowman debuted as a member of the Wyatt Family in the summer of 2015. He became a solo act for WWE when he was drafted to Raw in July of 2016. Before competing in the WWE, Strowman was a champion strongman powerlifter.
The heart of the matter
The Strowman/Big Show ring implosion angle from last night has gotten mainstream attention from a variety of outlets including ESPN. After their highly publicised angle from last night, Strowman took to Instagram to publicly thank the Big Show for the moment.
It must be noted that Strowman is being presented as a monster heel right now in the WWE. A genuine shout out to the Big Show after massacring him in the ring contradicts his character significantly.
The impact
The angle from Raw last night between Big Show and Braun Strowman was undoubtedly a home run. The fan reaction at the arena and the following buzz it created on social media is proof of that.
Last week he created buzz for the WWE when he decimated Roman Reigns in legendary fashion that included tipping over an ambulance and this week he creates a similar buzz by destroying a WWE ring.
If WWE builds on this properly, they will have fans tuning into their program specifically to see what Braun Stroman will do next. That said, people want to buy-in blindly so they can believe what Braun Strowman is doing each week is real.
For that to happen, Instagram posts from Strowman need to go away. If there is one man in the WWE right now who needs to respect his character and kayfabe, its Braun. If he can, he’ll print money for the WWE.
Author’s take
I can’t stand when WWE Superstars are not more responsible when it comes to their social media accounts. To me, Strowman utilising Instagram in this fashion significantly impacts the segment negatively. In addition to this, it hurts his character.
Strowman is supposed to be a monstrous heel that everyone fears. They executed that vision perfectly over the last two weeks on Raw with the ambulance angle and the ring imploding.
Strowman posting a thank you message out-of-character just gives the audience a reason to believe that what they saw on TV isn’t real. Obviously, we know it isn’t. However, when we watch, we want to believe. The more real it feels, the more invested the audience can get.
