What’s the story?
Chris Jericho’s United States title victory over Kevin Owens at Payback gave an unexpected twist to a predictable PPV from the get go.
Y2J is now expected to move to SmackDown and become a full-time member of the blue brand, but before he sets foot on a new journey as a man in blue, the legendary star was involved in a hilarious backstage segment with Kurt Angle and the two men who’re partly relevant because of Y2J himself – Tom Phillips and Mike Rome.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
In case you didn’t know....
Jericho’s win at Payback has come as a major shock to many of the fans, but as we were the first to report much before the PPV, WWE had already taken the decision to put the title around his waist. The 6-time World Champion is expected to leave next week for a tour with his band Fozzy and his return date is unknown at the moment.
Considering the circumstances, Jericho may have a short transitional reign where he drops the title to KO or AJ Styles on SmackDown Live sooner rather than later. Whatever may be the case, SmackDown LIVE will now get to experience the gift of Jericho. Drink it maaaannnn!
The heart of the matter
Jericho has been pure comedic gold. His interactions with Tom Phillips and Mike Rome have made for some of the quirkiest segments in recent memory. Due to the slight similarity in the appearance of the two, the new United States Champion has often mixed up their names and to see the two with Jericho and Kurt Angle also in the mix was hilarious. Laugh on maaannn!
What’s next?
Jericho is expected to make the switch to SmackDown this week. Kevin Owens may activate his mandatory rematch clause and get a championship match this week itself, with another title change a sure shot possibility. It seems WWE have convinced Y2J to work a few more dates and drop the title on SmackDown before he goes on tour with Fozzy.
The reason behind the move is said to be SmackDown’s paper thin roster and the fact that a big name in Jericho could help give the blue brand a much-needed boost ahead of Backlash, however short his stint may be.
Author’s take
What can I say, Y2J is the GOAT! As Kurt Angle said, his current run is probably the best of his career as he never fails to reinvent himself and crack the fans up everytime he gets his hands on a mic. It’s a shame he’ll be taking a hiatus, but as they say absence makes the heart grow fonder and it holds true in Y2J’s case. The friends of Jericho will wait in anticipation!
For now, let’s see what WWE has in store for him on SmackDown. Sound off on the possibilities in the comments’ section.
