WWE News: Curt Hawkins returning to the WWE

Curt Hawkins being brought into SmackDown Live to bolster the roster

The last episode of SmackDown Live was an eventful one going into SummerSlam. Between Randy Orton demolishing Heath Slater, Bray Wyatt abandoning his Wyatt family member Erick Rowan and Cena driving Styles through the announcer’s table, WWE sneaked in a vignette about Curt Hawkins.

Curt Hawkins, as few might remember, had a somewhat uneventful run with the company back in 2007 when he debuted in ECW and later in SmackDown as part of a tag team with Zack Ryder. The two began as the “Major Brothers” before reverting to their most well-known names as Edge’s “Edge Head” lackeys. Hawkins and Ryder split in 2009. Hawkins was part of several other teams before returning to NXT in 2014 before he was released that year.

Rumors had been flying over the past few weeks that the former TNA world tag team champion had been one of the superstars that had been contacted to make a return. This Tuesday, WWE laid to rest all the speculations and confirmed Hawkins’ return with a short clip.

The clip wasn't particularly original or good - entitled "Curt Hawkins Facts", it used recycled jokes that have circulated on the Internet for years and applied them to Hawkins. Through the course of the video, messages played such as, "Curt Hawkins counted to infinity... twice," "Curt Hawkins can slam a revolving door," and "Curt Hawkins doesn't flush the toilet - he scares the crap out of it".

WWE didn’t set a return date for Curt, who’s been wrestling in the gruelling independent circuit for the past two years under his real name, Brian Myers. Hopefully, he’ll prove the vignette right, unlike the Shelton Benjamin trailer that we saw a couple weeks ago.

At the Great American Bash on July 20, 2008, Hawkins and Ryder won the WWE Tag Team Championship from John Morrison and the Miz in a fatal four way for the Tag titles which also featured Jesse and Festus and Finlay and Hornswoggle after Hawkins pinned Jesse. Their victory made them the youngest tag team champions in WWE history.

On the surface, Curt Hawkins seems like the last person that would be expected to be working this sort of larger-than-life angle, but if he’s going to be fully inept and unaware of how silly and bombastic it is, then it might just be perfect. It’s certainly better than his last gimmick in WWE. Now it will be interesting to see how WWE resurrect this forgotten superstar and use him in the bigger scheme of things.

If Hawkins does get over, it’ll be interesting to see whether WWE gives him a push into the mid-card title scene. He could also enter the tag team division with any of the Superstars that needs some momentum.
