WWE News: Edge claims he was supposed to be World Champion a year prior to winning it

Should he have been Champion on even more occasions?
Should he have been Champion on even more occasions?

What's the story?

I was recently in attendance for a Q&A session at a show in Dublin, Ireland with WWE Hall of Famer Edge. Among the great stories and questions Edge discussed, the 11-time WWE Heavyweight Champion revealed that he should have had at least one more World Championship title on his record, but with a catch.

In case you didn't know...

Top WWE officials were always high on Edge and saw him as a future major star as early as 2000.

New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE

The company originally planned to break up Edge and Christian as a team just prior to WrestleMania 16 in 2000 - but managed to convince them otherwise. When they eventually did split up in September the following year, plans were in place for Edge to receive a monster push.

By the time 2002 rolled around and he was working solo on SmackDown, then-creative writer Paul Heyman told him that he saw Edge as the brand's version of Sting in WCW. In other words, the show's top face and progressively, establishing himself as the company's top dog too. However after breaking his neck, those plans changed drastically.

The heart of the matter

Edge is currently touring the UK with Inside The Ropes. He kick-started the tour in Ireland in Belfast, and Dublin this past Sunday. I was personally in attendance during his Dublin show.

During the great stories and questions being answered about his career, Edge spoke about his heel turn in 2004. He revealed it was a joint decision by both himself and the creative team, having not received the response he did while on SmackDown, while also being booed out of the building in his home town of Toronto at SummerSlam 2004.

Now while he didn't go into much detail on this, he did reveal that he was planned to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Triple H at Taboo Tuesday 2004. However, there was a catch.

Edge claimed that the voting for the show was 100% legit and management told him that should he be voted to be Triple H's challenger, over Shawn Michaels and Chris Benoit, then he would become the Champion. However, he lost out to Michaels by just 2%. He was said to have been as very crushed and angry over it, but also used it as fuel to become the company's best heel.

What's next?

Edge will be wrapping up his UK tour with Inside The Ropes this coming week. After appearances in Belfast on November 10, Dublin the 11th and London on Monday night, he will feature in Manchester on the 13 and Glasgow, Scotland, on the 14th.

The second Season of the Edge & Christian show is expected to hit the WWE Network before the year's end.
