What’s Next?
This is a major win for the WWE on its biggest weekend of the year. Jim Ross is the greatest of all time and the timing of this announcement is not an accident. JR will be back this weekend on TV to call a match as a guest commentator at WrestleMania 33. So, let the speculation begin. Which match will it be?
Easy possibilities are Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg for the WWE Universal Championship or The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns. Hearing JR’s voice on each of those matches will certainly make those matches that much more important.
Author’s Take
Jim Ross adds a level of credibility to any match that he calls. He truly is the greatest wrestling announcer of all time. Having JR back with the WWE is significant in a lot of ways. First and foremost, as the WWE Network grows, JR will be an invaluable resource. He’s seen it all in the world of wrestling and will be able to add his expertise in a lot of ways as they add content to the Network machine.
Further, any guest spots he does at the commentary table during major events is icing on the cake. As for Sunday at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, JR needs to be the voice behind The Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns.
Regardless of what happens in that match, it will dictate a shift in the company creative direction for the year. This could be Undertaker’s last match and Roman Reigns should be turning heel with a victory. Jim Ross is the guy that can sell that moment. A moment like Taker retiring is a moment that simply wouldn’t sound right without Ross’s words behind it.
