The heart of the matter
Jim Ross remembers the original War Games concept quite well and looks back on those days fondly. He spoke to the Two Man Power Trip about the revival of this old-school gimmick match concept and expressed hope it will deliver.
"I was happy. It is a neat hook to build around for the NXT Takeover. It is a very marketable tool and that is how I look at it. It's got name identity with some older wrestling fans and the name has been bandied about some to the younger fans and trickled down. War Games has got a little bit of a legacy if it and I don't know exactly the structure of it but I can just tell you that if it is executed correctly it could really be special."
The WWE Hall Of Famer also went on to explain how in his opinion, the War Games matches actually lost their appeal as the years went on. It's a generally accepted belief that the War Games matches did start to underdeliver due to the amazing legacy set before them and the lacklustre booking of the match.
What's next?
NXT Takeover: Houston has the potential to overshadow Survivor Series, which occurs on the following night. The WWE Superstars of tomorrow booked in this contest will need to deliver in order to live up to the hype. But at this point, the NXT roster is no stranger to producing outstanding events.
Author's take
When you think about who is in this WarGames match, it makes this idea even more exciting. NXT has some real innovators in their ranks and NXT TakeOver: WarGames will give them a chance to grab that brass ring.
The real question in mind is how will a modern-day WWE produce a WarGames match without blood. Those matches were historically unmerciful and it was common for the mat to resemble Jackson Pollock's artwork by the end of the match (if Pollock only had various shades of red to paint with).
WWE has been able to produce Hell In A Cell and Elimination Chamber matches in this modern era of no-colour so I'm sure they'll come up with something. But with all the hype going into this match, it might be hard to top the amount of anticipation for the big day in November.
