This main event of this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW saw The New Day successfully defend their WWE World Tag Team Championships against the teams of Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho in a triple threat match. This allowed the trio to pass Demolition’s record and become the longest reigning champions in company history.
The match drew huge praise from none other than the legendary Kurt Angle, who took to Twitter to give his thoughts.
Angle referred to the match as ‘awesome’, adding the hashtag ‘five-star match’ to the end of his tweet. Angle was subsequently queried on his review by a less enamoured fan, forcing the Olympic Gold Medallist to back up his words with experience.
Angle stated that a three-way tag match is immensely difficult to pull off, and the job that the six men did in last night’s main event, deserved every single one of the stars our Olympic Hero gave it.
Angle has been known to take to social media to air his opinions in the past, although the last 18 months have seen a rejuvenated Angle choose to keep his more inflammatory opinions to himself. 2016 saw the ‘Kurt Angle returning to WWE’ rumours ramp up once more, and whilst the former multi-time world champion is yet to make his return to his professional wrestling home, it seems more a case of ‘when’ as opposed to ‘if’.
The former TNA man is no stranger to three-way tag team matches, being a competitor in one of the greatest matches of that type in history.
Way back in 2002, Angle teamed with Chris Benoit to go up against Los Guerreros (Eddie and Chavo Guerrero) and then WWE Tag Team Champions Edge & Rey Mysterio, with Eddie and Chavo coming out on top and walking away with the titles. Those six men became synonymous with the excellence of SmackDown in the early days of the brand split.
While last night’s main event wasn’t on the level of that classic match, The New Day, Rollins & Reigns and the cantankerous Canadian Best Friends put on another fantastic main event, in what has been a stellar year of in-ring action for WWE. If 2017 gives us as many great matches as 2016, then we are in for a great year.
Here’s hoping that Kurt Angle returns to WWE competition to take part in some of those bouts.
