What’s the story?
As is usually the case in professional wrestling, the actual personal and business behind-the-scenes drama is as interesting as what’s going on in the ring. And while he’s mellowed on commenting about Impact Wrestling and its officials, (and delegating that to his wife) Matt Hardy still has a thing or two to say about it.
Just recently, he commented publically on the recent drama involving Impact Wrestling, the NWA, and that company’s new owner, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and now Matt has more to say about his previous employers.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
The background
Corgan has been an open and enthusiastic wrestling fan for a long time now, previously running Resistance Pro Wrestling in Chicago – which led to this brilliant local TV ad for a furniture company:
While he’s apparently now the owner of the NWA, for a moment it looked like he was going to be in charge of TNA/Impact Wrestling. Of course, we know how that turned out.
The heart of the matter
The current WWE Raw Tag Team champions The Hardy Boys, were in Impact during the small window that Corgan was involved with the company, and the former (and again soon to be?) Broken One had his own thoughts on the situation. In a reply to another tweet, Hardy replied:
What’s next?
As of right now, Impact is being run by its original founder, Jeff Jarrett, who has apparently combined the company with his previous enterprise, Global Force Wrestling (thus the reference in Matt’s tweet). Corgan’s lawsuit against TNA and its owner, Anthem, has apparently been settled and it will be interesting to see what he does with the NWA.
We’re also still waiting on word as to what the situation is in regarding the ownership of the “Broken Hardy” gimmick.
Author’s take
One would think that if a tweet like Hardy’s would have any bearing on Anthem and WWE coming to an agreement on the gimmick, it would have been taken down by now, but as of this writing, it’s still up.
Personally, I was pretty curious to see what Corgan would have done with TNA, simply because he’s both so creative and such a weirdo that it would have at least been interesting – and there’s a good chance the Hardys would still be there, too.
