What's the story?
Only Matt Hardy can make sense of what goes on in his deranged mind. Recently, in an interview with 2K, the WWE superstar was asked about the difference between his recently adopted 'Woken' gimmick and classic TNA 'Broken' persona.
Out poured a range of cryptic verbiage, only some of which really makes sense. We thank Wrestling Inc. for the transcript.
In case you didn't know...
Matt Hardy has always been a creative individual, and he reinvented himself during his TNA run to come up with the idea of the 'Broken' universe. It took a while in WWE, but after a lot of fan support, Hardy adopted a 'Woken' avatar, that he uses to this very day.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
The 'Woken' character is very over the top and laughs in a rather distinctive manner. There are several parallels between the two characters, but Hardy elaborated on the difference as well.
The heart of the matter
So here's the difference between the two gimmicks, from the horse's mouth:
They are very similar. Basically, Broken Matt broke down the barriers in his mind and could use more of that ability. And returning back home, the reception that we received when we came out at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, it held my condition, the Broken mind, dormant for a matter of months.
He went on to describe how he reclaimed his 'Woken' magic, thanks to The Consumer of Terrestrial Entities:
And then, after touching the magical creature known as Bray Wyatt, it actually houses Sister Abigail, which I was able to draw from her magic and it reignited the magic within me. So I became Woken and realized all of my broken brilliance.
What's next?
Bray Wyatt and Matt Hardy have been at each other's throats for a while now. Let's see if their rivalry plays out in the Royal Rumble match. It'll be interesting to see if Jeff Hardy returns as Brother Nero or not.
Author's take
The difference between 'Broken' Matt Hardy and 'Woken' Matt Hardy is the fact that TNA handled him far more creatively. He's already getting pinned in WWE, which really should not be happening.
Let's hope WWE realizes how to book 'Woken Brilliance' in the right manner.
