What’s the story?

On a recent edition of the Sky Sports Lock Up Podcast, Michael Cole opened up on a myriad of topics.

Cole spoke about whether or not he’s aware of how the events are set to play out at WrestleMania beforehand. Besides, Cole also weighed in on the Roman Reigns-Brock Lesnar storyline.

In case you didn’t know…

Michael Cole initially served as a backstage interviewer in the WWE, however, eventually transitioned to the role of a lead commentator.

Cole now serves as the lead commentator for the WWE’s RAW brand—a role he’s been serving in for the past several years.

The heart of the matter

Michael Cole elucidated that while he’s aware of the majority of backstage happenings and how storylines will progress on WWE programming, he prefers to keep himself in the dark regarding the outcomes of storylines, matches and other proceedings at WrestleMania. Cole stated—

"I tell people for as much as we complain for the life that we live sometimes, because we are always away on the road and away from our family, life goes on, there's nothing like it in the world. You know, I'm involved in a lot of things with the company, but WrestleMania is the one time of the year that I don't want to know anything that is happening as far as stories, so to be able to sit there and take in moments like the Hardy Boys returning, which I didn't know about, or Brock Lesnar defeating The Undertaker a number of years ago, which I had no idea about; stuff like that…It really makes you appreciate this business and the ups and downs and the roller coaster ride it takes you on.”

Additionally, Cole recalled that he hopes to deliver memorable lines during moments such as The Hardy Boyz returning at WrestleMania 33, which in turn will forever live on in the fans’ memories as they can rewatch those moments on the WWE Network.

Furthermore, Cole explained that the WWE has hit the bulls-eye, as regards the build-up to the Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar Universal title feud.

Cole added that Reigns has grown immensely since his first WrestleMania encounter with Lesnar that took place in the main event of WrestleMania 31—a great matchup that was unfortunately overshadowed by one of the top moments in ‘Mania history, which had Seth Rollins cash in his Money in the Bank contract.

Cole also pointed out that the WWE walks a tightrope when it comes to WrestleMania, since most of the matches are announced several weeks prior to the event, and the WWE has got to maintain a near-perfect balance between hyping the matchups with a few face-offs and matches, while also ensuring that the Superstars don’t engage heavily before their all-important match at ‘Mania.

Cole also emphasized that the Reigns-Lesnar rivalry has blurred the lines between story and reality, given the uncertainty of Lesnar’s WWE future as he continues to tease re-signing with the UFC.

What’s next?

The WWE’s WrestleMania 34 PPV is set to take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on 8 April.

The event is set to be headlined by a WWE Universal Championship Match between reigning titleholder Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns—with Michael Cole expected to be a part of the commentary team calling the event.

Author’s take

Kudos to Michael Cole for asserting the passion he has for the WWE and the pro-wrestling industry.

That said, the Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar feud truly has blurred the lines between story and reality. This year is indeed pivotal and could see Lesnar leave some huge shoes to fill, in case he leaves for the UFC.
