What’s the story?
Smackdown Live Woman’s Superstar Natalya was recently a guest on Lillian Garcia’s podcast “Making Their Way To The Ring”, where she revealed that she suffered from an eating disorder around the time of her uncle Owen Hart’s death. This is the first time she has opened up on the subject in public.
In case you didn’t know...
Natalya signed a developmental contract with the WWE in 2007 and has been a mainstay in their women’s division for nearly a decade. Though she is one of the longest tenured women in the WWE, she only has won only one WWE Divas Championship.
The heart of the matter
Natalya would explain her eating disorder further to Lillian Garcia by saying:
“I had an eating disorder when I was eighteen and it lasted for about, I mean they say it never really goes away, but it spanned the course of about three years and in the course of two months after my uncle Owen died-the summer that my uncle died, I lost forty pounds in two months. And my family was really scared and I remember being very angry at them and thinking like ‘Why are they confronting me? They should be happy, I look great’. I didn’t realize it until years later how crazy and scary I looked losing that much weight. I was wearing kids clothes and it was a really hard time for me, but I was reeling from the tragedy of my uncle passing away and how that affected my family and also I think because my Dad wasn’t a part of my life because he was working, and busy, and gone.”
She had stated that once Owen passed away, she had a hard time being able to have any control and the only thing she could control was what she ate.
What’s next?
Natalya is in limbo on SmackDown Live after her intense feud with Nikki Bella. While she isn’t involved in a feud currently, she’s been featured a lot lately and could find herself in the SmackDown Women’s Championship picture sometime this year.
Author’s take
I have to commend Natalya for being able to open up and talk about a difficult situation. It is never easy to talk about sensitive and personal issues such as this regardless of the fact that it is currently behind her.
On the business side of things, I had a feeling that Natalya would finally get that push she’s deserved. If Naomi didn’t come back early from injury, she could have been the winner at WrestleMania.
