What’s the story?
The team of Primo and Epico, formerly known as The Shining Stars, has now been renamed and repackaged as "The Colóns". The team that was recently drafted from RAW to SmackDown as part of the Superstar Shake-Up appears to have ditched their Puerto Rican gimmick in favour of one that’s closer to their real life personas.
In their first outing with the new name, Primo and Epico registered a victory over American Alpha in a standard tag team match on SmackDown LIVE.
In case you didn’t know...
Primo (real name Eddie Colón) and Epico (real name Orlando Colón) are real-life cousins. Primo is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Carlos Colón Jr. and also the brother of former WWE Superstar Carlito. Epico is their first cousin.
Primo and Epico had been wrestling as “The Shining Stars” on the RAW brand for most of 2016 under a Puerto Rican gimmick, owing to their real-life Puerto Rican origins. The cousins were drafted to SmackDown Live as part of the Superstar Shake-Up.

The heart of the matter
The team of Epico and Primo, formerly known as The Shining Stars, made their SmackDown debut by facing off against American Alpha. In a standard tag team match, Primo and Epico picked up the victory after Jason Jordan was pinned by Epico.
A video of the match can be seen below:
During the match, the commentary team on SmackDown LIVE put the team of Primo and Epico over by the talking about their wrestling heritage but did not refer to their Shining Stars gimmick.
What’s next?
With recent rumours of Carlito possibly being headed to the WWE, the name change appears to be in line with the name that the team of Carlito and Primo formerly had from 2008 to 2010. Although the match had no stipulations as such, The Colons might very well be inserted into the title picture sometime soon.
Author’s take
Primo and Epico are two very talented wrestlers. After months of floundering on RAW, it appears that SmackDown, the land of opportunity, is the right place for them to truly become the “Shining Stars” that they were always supposed to be.
Their new gimmick, which is close to their real life legacies and personas seems to be a lot better than their comic gimmick as The Shining Stars. With Carlito possibly returning, one can only hope for good things to come from the Colon family!
