Alberto Del Rio had a successful WWE run with his first stint with the company in 2008 during which he won the World Heavyweight Championship and the 2011 Royal Rumble but it ended in 2014 when he left WWE after he got fired for slapping a WWE employee who made a racist joke. Since then he has wrestled for Mexican promotion AAA and then subsequently wrestled at World Wrestling Council, Ring of Honor and El Rey Network’s Lucha Underground.
In 2015, Del Rio returned to WWE at Hell in a Cell and defeated John Cena to snag the WWE United States Championship belt for a little while. But post November, it just wasn’t the same with him tagging along with Sheamus’ stable League of Nations, an unimaginative rendition of non-American stereotypes. Alberto was one of the most undervalued Superstars in WWE since the conception of the group and now it’s confirmed that he is leaving WWE for good.
Alberto’s contract has an out-clause at the end of this month and it looks like he will exercise it. However, there’s some good news for the former AAA star after quite a while. Lucha Underground reportedly are in talks with Alberto’s representatives in order to reprise the character ‘Alberto El Patron’ which he had previously portrayed on the wrestling show. The producers of the show, however, haven’t spoken about TV deals for the latest season of the Robert Rodriguez co-produced Lucha Underground and unless their revenue really picks up, they might not be able to afford to offer Alberto a contract he will be happy to sign.

AAA also has apparently shown interest in having Alberto fight for them even though he had previously spoken publicly about of disorganization within AAA and even kept his WWE signing a secret from them. Whether the Mexican promotion will be willing to offer Alberto a good contract however, is unclear.
TNA has reportedly promised Alberto that he will be given a position at the top of the roster and had already wanted him in 2015 before he joined WWE. In an interview he was asked about why he didn’t join TNA, Alberto said that if someone wants him to fight in their promotion, they have to pay him enough for doing so. In that regard, WWE has been the best place for him as it offered a sizeable financial income as well as international exposure and recognition. Billy Corgan from TNA might, however, decide to pay for Alberto to be in his promotion since it would be a good move for TNA.
