What’s the story?
The Sun recently caught up with WWE Superstar Sheamus who spoke to them about how the current WWE product is far better than it was during the extremely popular Attitude Era. The Celtic Warrior also touched upon his tag team with Cesaro.
In case you didn’t know…
It took Sheamus a little less than 6 months after making his main roster debut in June 2009 to become the WWE Champion. This made him the first ever Irish-born WWE Champion. Apart from this, ‘The Great White’ has won three other world championships and has also been a 2-time United States Champion.

The heart of the matter
According to Sheamus, the WWE has far better athletes and provides greater entertainment at present compared to what they did in the Attitude Era. Citing the example of his tag team partner Cesaro, he claimed that what the current generation does in the ring is at a much higher level than anyone from that time.
Here’s what ‘The Celtic Warrior’ had to say:
“The level of athleticism has evolved so much since we watched as kids. The athletes that WWE has now are far superior to anything that we had the 1980s or the 1990s. You look back at the Attitude Era and the level of entertainment we put in the ring now. The Attitude Era doesn’t even come close.”
He added:
“You watch some of the stuff Cesaro does in the ring; with his size, the way he moves around the ring, the moves he hits, the way he picks up guys twice his size. It’s just a different level.”
Talking about what makes his tag team with ‘The Swiss Superman’ successful, Sheamus explained that it was due to the fact that they are two separate individuals. Contrary to the usual theory of tag teams being a unit, they have their own strong identities and that is what makes them work. He stated:
“I think the great thing about our tag team is that we’re two different individuals. Tag teams of the past have been a unit. But the fact we’re not a unit, that we have our own strong identities, is what makes it work because we’re competing against each other too.”
What next?
At the Payback pay-per-view, the team of Sheamus and Cesaro will get a chance to win back the Raw Tag Team titles as they take on the current champions, The Hardy Boyz.
Author’s take
While one can agree with Sheamus on the fact that the levels of athleticism in the WWE are much higher these days, the entertainment dished out during the Attitude Era was definitely better than what it is now.
