What's the story?
WWE announced a new partnership with the company Next VR on Tuesday. This partnership will bring the WWE Universe new and unique experiences in virtual reality from major events that will occur in 2018.
In case you didn't know...
If you're not looking for the in-depth gaming that the PlayStation VR headset offers, you can get a decent virtual reality headset isn't too expensive. For example, Amazon has the Samsung Gear VR headset for $29.99.
The heart of the matter
Within the Next VR application, members of the WWE Universe will get to witness these experiences for free after those specific events have occurred. Each experience will be approximately 10 minutes in length.
The CEO of Next VR, David Cole, would provide the following quote to WWE.com:
“WWE is amazing in VR, and we know fans are going to love it,” said David Cole, NextVR CEO. “Our patented VR broadcasting pipeline will bring fans ringside with WWE Superstars to experience the electrifying energy and spectacle firsthand.”
For each of the WWE events chosen for the application, Next VR will work alongside the WWE production team to place custom virtual reality cameras to capture all of the action for the WWE Universe to witness.
The WWE also provided the following on their website:
Fans with a Samsung GearVR headset or Google Daydream View, along with a compatible smartphone, PlayStation VR, or Windows Mixed Reality can download the free NextVR app from the corresponding platform store to access the free highlights.
What's next?
The next major event for the WWE is the Royal Rumble; which will take place on January 28th from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time of this writing, there is no word if the Next VR app will have footage from the January extravaganza.
Author's take
With virtual reality being more accessible than ever, I think this is a very cool partnership. Imagine witnessing Jeff Hardy do a Swanton Bomb from the top rope through your virtual reality headset, or running with John Cena down the ramp for his entrance?
There are infinite possibilities that the WWE and Next VR can do with this technology.
