From the WWE Rumor Mill: Rey Mysterio set to meet with WWE ahead of contract signing

Ent
Rey Mysterio is reportedly in talks with WWE over a return

What's the story?

There's been a lot of talk over the past few days surrounding Rey Mysterio potentially returning to WWE ahead of WrestleMania, and potentially even facing John Cena on the grandest stage of them all.

Well, as per Pro Wrestling Sheet, the deal hangs on both parties agreeing on a few key details before pen is put to paper when the parties meet next month

In case you didn't know...

Rey Mysterio shocked the world when he returned to WWE in the Royal Rumble match, even making it into the final four.

New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE

While several sources reported it to be a one-off deal, it was rumoured that Rey would sign a part-time deal with WWE allowing him to take some time off in spells and not have to undertake the near 300-day-per-year WWE schedule.

The heart of the matter

Well, after Justin Barrasso claimed that Rey Mysterio was being lined up by WWE to face John Cena at WrestleMania.

Well, PW Insider reported yesterday that Mysterio and WWE are in talks, and Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet corroborated today, along with adding details of what stands between WWE and Mysterio agreeing on a deal.

Pro Wrestling Sheet have claimed that Mysterio is meeting with officials in person next month to hopefully finalise the contract, but they say their sources do indeed say Mysterio still wants a part-time deal where he’d be paid appropriately for the name value he brings to the table.

One other potential stumbling block could be that Mysterio wants to be allowed to partake in projects outwith WWE.

Both PW Insider and Pro Wrestling Sheet have confirmed that Triple H is the point person handling negotiations.

Conflicting reports arose that Mysterio was backstage at SmackDown Live ahead of signing a deal - none of which can be substantiated, although Mysterio did meet up with Sin Cara.

What's next?

Well, the rumour is that Rey Mysterio would face John Cena, but there's no real build from the Royal Rumble Match for such a match to take place.

Cena has been speaking about the likelihood of him missing WrestleMania as he's not been able to secure a place in any of the Championship matches, recently shifting from RAW to SmackDown to try his luck on the blue brand.

The 16-time World Champion is now in the Fastlane main event, although he would have to overcome AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin to face Shinsuke Nakamura at WrestleMania.

As for Rey Mysterio, there's no doubt his return would be met with excitement no matter if it's against John Cena or not, the fan favourite got a huge pop at the Royal Rumble.

Author's take

It does seem that a deal is likely here with just a few details standing in between WWE and Mysterio - namely how often he appears for the company and if he can appear at events that don't fall under the WWE umbrella.

Given the reaction Mysterio got at the Royal Rumble, you'd have to think WWE would pull out all the stops to get him signed!
