What's the story?
On a recent edition of the Something To Wrestle podcast, Bruce Prichard spoke about Goldberg’s 2003 run with the company and revealed that Vince Mcmahon was initially in two minds about signing the WCW star.
In case you didn’t know…
Goldberg was one of the biggest stars in WCW during the mid-1990s and is best known for his 173-match winning streak. In 2003, he signed with the WWE and destroyed The Rock in what was his first major feud as a WWE star.

He went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship and add another feather to his cap. In 2004, he left the WWE after defeating Brock Lesnar in a poorly-received match at WrestleMania XX.
The heart of the matter
On a recent instalment of the Something To Wrestle podcast, Prichard said that Vince was apprehensive about signing Goldberg as he did not want to sign a full-time deal. The man formerly known as Brother Love added that he ultimately could not overcome the temptation of working with a star of his stature and signed him to a short deal.
Prichard also revealed that Goldberg was going through a bad phase back then and did not really interact with many people in the backstage area. However, according to Prichard, they still gave him a run with the World Heavyweight Championship as they were trying to make the most out of his WWE stint.
What's next?
Goldberg was inducted into the WWE HOF earlier this month and it remains to be seen if he'll ever lace up those boots again.
Author's take
Goldberg’s 2003 run was a bit of a letdown simply as it ended on a bad note. However, his feuds with The Rock and HHH were intense and made for a decent watch. Moreover, his well-received 2016-2017 run may not have even happened that it not been for the initial run. As such, VKM’s decision to sign him in 2003 was indeed ‘best for business’.
