What's the story?
Chris Jericho would post on Instagram shortly after attacking Kenny Omega at the World Tag League finals for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Take a look at his post below:
In case you didn't know...
After Omega's IWGP United States Championship defense against Baretta at Power Struggle, he proclaimed that now is usually the time that someone would challenge him for Wrestle Kingdom. After nobody initially answered his challenge, Omega immediately assumed that nobody could hang with him, but then a vignette played on the screen.
To the shock of the pro wrestling world, Chris Jericho was on that vignette and he challenged Omega to a match at Wrestle Kingdom; which Omega immediately accepted.
The heart of the matter
At the World Tag League finals, Omega teamed up with The Young Bucks to take on SHO, YOH, and Rocky Romero in a six-man tag team match.
The Elite of the Bullet Club earned the victory, but as Omega was celebrating, a video of Jericho congratulating The Elite on their victory appeared. After the video, the lights came back on, and there was Jericho in the ring!
Jericho would land a Codebreaker on Omega and then bust him open with his Kenny's championship belt. You can see the beginning of that attack on the video below posted by New Japan's Twitter account:
Jericho would also attack one of the Bucks as well as a referee and color commentator Don Callis.
On the Instagram post, with Omega's blood still on his face, Jericho proclaimed that he now officially introduced himself to Kenny Omega. It gave Jericho a thrill to leave Omega laying in a pool of his own blood, and that was just a taste of what's to come at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
What's next?
In a little over three short weeks, the dream match between Omega and Jericho happens live at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th for Wrestle Kingdom 12. The event also features the IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada defending his title against Tetsuya Naito.
The event can be streamed through New Japan World, and you can subscribe at the following link.
Author's take
I didn't know if anything could be done to further the excitement for Jericho v. Omega, but the surprise attack by Jericho did just that.
It was definitely a nice touch having Jericho cut a promo for his Instagram account with Omega's blood still on his face. The match will truly be a classic, and I cannot wait to watch it.
