What's the story?

The NXT Tag Team Title Match ended in utter confusion and disarray at NXT Takeover: New Orleans when there was a shocking turn during the matchup. After the Undisputed Era had interrupted the Final of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament during the final NXT before the Takeover, William Regal made the bout for the NXT Tag Team Titles at Takeover: New Orleans a Triple Threat Tag Team Matchup, with the two finalists of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament, the Authors of Pain and the team of Pete Dunne and Roderick Strong, facing the Tag Team Champions, the Undisputed Era.

The winners of the bout would not only receive the Tag Team Titles, but also the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Cup.

In case you didn't know...

Moustache Mountain was supposed to compete in the Tag Team Classic Tournament, but due to an injury to Tyler Bate, the duo was forced to withdraw and were replaced by Dunne and Strong. Dunne and Strong had previously competed against each other for the United Kingdom Title, where Strong had not been successful. The two of them were successful as a tag team and defeated the team of Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan as well as Sanity, on their way to the Final of the tournament.

On the other side of things, Undisputed Era was handicapped when Bobby Fish suffered an injury. They tried to evade their title defence when they interrupted the final of the tournament, but William Regal made the bout at Takeover a Triple Threat instead, with Adam Cole having to step into the Tag Team Match after his Ladder Match for the North American Championship to defend their titles.

The heart of the matter

The match was hard hitting and saw a tired Cole, battered after his Ladder Match for the North American Title, and O'Reilly, do their best to retain their Tag Team Titles. At one point it looked like Pete Dunne was about to come away with the win, but was turned on by his very own partner.

Dunne seemed to be about to pick up the victory when Roderick Strong hit him with the End of Heartache in a shock move, and then put the prone body of Kyle O'Reilly on him to help Undisputed Era retain the titles.

After the match was over, Roderick Strong put on an Undisputed Era armband as Cole and O'Reilly looked on in delight, signifying that he had joined their faction.

What's next?

With a new member now added to their faction, Undisputed Era will be stronger than before. They will have to watch out, however, as they will have more opposition from the likes of Pete Dunne as he will try to avenge the betrayal of Roderick Strong.

Author's take

The turn came out of nowhere, as Strong and Dunne looked like they were doing well. The duo had been working well with each other, but all of that came to a sudden and brutal end with this match.
