NXT North American Championship Match: Johnny Gargano vs Keith Lee (c)

Johnny Gargano ran in with a headlock but was easily shot off into the corner. The Face of NXT avoided a spinning back fist and was nearly decapitated with a leaping back kick as the match got off to a rocking start at TakeOver: In Your House.

He rushed in again, only to get taken to the mat with a shoulder tackle. Gargano baited Keith Lee to the floor, but a suicide dive was easily caught. Lee's Spirit Bomb was countered twice, leading to Gargano scratching the eye again.

Lee responded by driving Gargano into the steps and apron. A massive haymaker rocked Gargano on the floor, forcing him to run to the stage to try to escape. Lee followed, bashing his head against the door before landing Grizzly Magnum.

Back in the ring, Gargano caught Lee sliding through the ropes, going after his injured eye and hand again. Lee shook him off and caught him with another big left hand. However, that seemingly re-injured it. That gave Gargano ample time to recover and chop the big man down.

Gargano continued to dig into the eye of Lee, all the while keeping the ref's vision obscured. Lee's hand was wrapped around the ring post as Gargano attempted to break it. The NXT North American Champion struggled to get to his feet at this point, with Gargano tearing at his eye socket as he had him trapped in an anaconda vice.

Lee fought out of pinfall after taking some knees and elbow drop to the face. Eventually, Lee grabbed a hold of Gargano's wrist, battering him with hefty forearms and right hands (the healthy hand). A backbreaker earned Lee a near fall and brought him back into this title bout.

Gargano was rocked with more heavy strikes but continued to target the left hand, countering a Spirit Bomb with an armbar, tearing at his fingers all the while. Lee, with pure strength alone, tossed Gargano out of the hold and leveled him with a clothesline.

Again, Gargano countered a Spirit Bomb by tearing at Lee's hand before rolling him over for a sunset flip. Lee kicked out. Gargano also managed to counter the Big Bang Catastrophe with a roll-up, but it was broken up as well. Lee managed to get a big maneuver off, spiking Gargano with a pop-up spinebuster that sent Johnny TakeOver to the floor.

Gargano was able to stun Lee with another kick to the hand and dropped him headfirst with a tornado DDT through the ropes. Gargano had to stop the count, as Lee was nearly counted out. However, thanks to that, the champ stood up and delivered an devastating Pounce to Gargano, shooting him right through the plexiglass.

Candice LeRae attempted to interfere, leading to Mia Yim chasing her down to prevent any foul play. However, this allowed Gargano to tear into Lee's eye with the key as the ref was distracted.

One Final Beat connected, but Lee kicked out. The DIY superkick landed. Lee kicked out again. And again. And again. Three superkicks couldn't put the Limitless One down. Lee popped up Gargano one-handed for the Spirit Bomb, nearly bouncing Gargano through the ropes.

Another Spirit Bomb and the Big Bang Catastrophe put Johnny Gargano away.

Results: Keith Lee defeated Johnny Gargano via pinfall to retain the NXT North American Championship.

Grade: A

The former favorite of the NXT Universe tried every trick in the book but simply could not put away Keith Lee. The NXT North American Champion picked up, arguably, the biggest win in his career tonight. The question is, who's next?
