WWE Payback 2013, was undoubtedly one of the best non-Wrestlemania PPVs of the year. With an excellent crowd supporting some really good in-ring matches, this PPV surely did live up to the expectations of fans. Though most results were as expected, there were a few moments that made us feel surprised especially Del Rio’s victory over Ziggler. The World title in particular has now opened up giving us a lot to anticipate in the days to come. The other matches too have opened up several new avenues and it is to be seen how well WWE handles in RAW tomorrow. For now let us look at the 5 talking points of Payback 2013.
CM Punk vs Jericho: ‘This was Awesome’
WWE’s second biggest star and by far the best in the roster today, CM Punk made his return after a break from wrestling post Wrestlemania. Chicago looked all set to welcome the hometown boy back into the ring as they cheered their hearts out for Punk. The match though brilliant was somewhat confusing as Punk wrestled as a babyface would do. That heel persona around him that existed before he left was missing and this could be an indication that Heyman’s going to have something against Punk soon. I expect a lot to answers on RAW tonight.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Del Rio and Ziggler exchange characters
Alberto Del Rio surprised everyone by beating Dolph Ziggler to become the new World Heavyweight Title. No one expected this to happen, but the way WWE carried it was absolutely brilliant. WWE used Ziggler’s concussion as a means to create sympathy as Del Rio looked relentless against the champion. Del Rio targeted Ziggler’s head over and over again as the already pro-Ziggler crowd sided to his corner completely. Del Rio’s heel-ish match strategy and a similar promo after the match does indicate that Ziggler and Del Rio have swapped their characters and this feud will continue with Ziggler as the face and Del Rio the heel. But what about Langston and AJ. Will the crowd manage to support them? As far as I see, WWE will separate Ziggler from the two in the weeks to come.
AJ vs Kaitlyn steals the show
While most of us would consider a divas match the best time for a restroom break, this match changed all that. AJ and Kaitlyn gave us a match worth mentioning and it was indeed nice to see the divas put on a show last night. The match was well paced and both the Divas did a great job to make sure at least a part of the crowd was into it. AJ predictably won the title with a submission move. WWE now needs to solidify this division and bring in a better storyline between the two to make some justice to the potential that these divas have shown.
John Cena put an end to the Ryback threat
John Cena went through hell and managed to come out unfazed as he ended Ryback’s challenge by putting him through the top of the ambulance. Ryback managed to surprisingly pin Cena clean in the first stage of the match after Cena knocked out most of the lumberjacks with a huge leap from the top rope. Cena then made a comeback as he managed to put Ryback through a table and then the ambulance to pick up the victory. WWE has now made it certain that Cena will continue in his winning path and losing the title doesn’t look like a probability.
WWE Teases RVD return
One of the best news I have heard in a little while. WWE have made the best signing of the year as they revealed that RVD will return to WWE in Money in the Bank. RVD will fill in the void that WWE has had for the past few months. His inclusion in the roster will make a huge impact. There are several ways that WWE can take this storyline and even hand RVD a surprise victory in the ladder match in the PPV. As of now let us sit back and wait for ‘Mr. Monday Night’ to return.
