Once upon a time, WWE used to have millions of viewers tuning it to see what was up. Unfortunately, television is not consumed in the same way and unless it's must-watch television, people watch the show at their own pace. To make a show must-watch, there needs to be a sense of urgency throughout the proceedings of the show.
Because Jerry 'The King' Lawler was taken out during the course of the night, it allowed for Vic Joseph to come in on commentary, which is probably going to be the way things go once Michael Cole retires from commentary. It has also led to the cancellation of the King's Court segment.

Maybe that was the point all along. The attack could have been a device to shake things up from what was advertised at the top of the show, to keep things supremely unpredictable.
