As we can see from the clip in this video, Elias may be the 24/7 Champion but there's more than one contender hot on his trail right now. However, he has been able to thwart the likes of Drake Maverick, who tried to steal his title during a recording session.
Imagine Elias performing before the audience, only for the lights to go out and for The Fiend to leave him in a heap in the middle of the ring! This would allow someone like R-Truth or Drake Maverick to sneak up and become Champion.

By making this title change happen, WWE does not make Elias look weak and more importantly, has The Fiend show up in a moment that nobody expects. Such cameos are necessary in my opinion, as The Fiend is the hottest character in the show.
