The United States Championship has not been prestigious in quite some time. While there have been good Champions and bad in recent times, none have been able to live up to the standards set by John Cena back when he was the reigning and defending Champion.
AJ Styles is certainly someone who has the capability of having better matches in the ring than Cena ever did. I personally think that as long as Styles holds the Championship, WWE has the chance to have him wrestle a variety of underutilized stars and have them showcase their wares to the world.

Someone like Cedric Alexander or even Buddy Murphy (as a wildcard) could come to the fore and tear it up with AJ Styles in a phenomenal clash (no pun intended). Maybe even Rey Mysterio.
Styles vs. Mysterio could potentially be a great match!
