Jinder Mahal suffered a ruptured patella tendon in 2019 and had to take time off for surgery. 'The Maharaja' returned for a brief period in 2020 but again had to leave WWE due to a second injury.
In a recent YouTube video, Jinder Mahal explained the reason behind his lengthy absence from WWE. He revealed that the doctor had identified a second injury when his knee started to swell up.
“So I showed the WWE doctor it’s swollen,” Mahal said. “He’s like, ‘Oh, we’ll drain it.’ I’ve got my knees drained before, so he drains it. He’s like, ‘Alright, stand up, should be good.’ I went to stand up and my knee locked. I was like, ‘Oh no.’ When all the swelling was there, I didn’t notice it but I had a torn piece of articular cartilage, so then I had to have surgery again,'' said Mahal
'The Modern Day Maharaja' further revealed that for the microfracture of the femur, the recovery time was another 10 months. This is why he couldn't return in 2020 and was out of action until January 2021.
