#2. WWE reportedly forcing Superstars to sign new contracts with a Twitch clause
As we had reported earlier, Vince McMahon sent another email to the WWE talent reminding them about the October 2nd deadline regarding severing all ties with third-party platforms.
WrestlingInc also reported that WWE would take control of the Twitch accounts of the Superstars within the next four weeks.
The talent told former Democratic Presidential candidate Andrew Yang that WWE is forcing the Superstars to sign new contracts, in which streaming on Twitch would become a work obligation. Talent who refuse to stream will have to give up the earnings or face the situation of getting fined or suspended.
Here's what Yang revealed:
Hearing from talent that WWE is forcing performers to sign new contracts that include Twitch. Streaming on Twitch will become a work obligation, and if talent doesn't stream they will forego earnings, be suspended or face penalties. Doesn't sound like independent contractors.
The backstage reactions to WWE's decision about Superstars streaming on Twitch, as expected, have not been positive. WWE is cracking down on the Superstars' third-party deals, and the idea is to control how the talent interacts with the fans outside the realms of kayfabe.
WWE Superstars, however, are independent contractors, and there could be negative repercussions to the company's latest move.
