What's the story?
This is a rumor killer we wish wasn't true. As revealed by Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, the rumored WrestleMania 35 match between John Cena and Samoa Joe is not the current plan as per backstage sources.
In case you didn't know...
Ever since Joe won the United States Championship on the March 5th SmackDown episode, the speculation regarding a long-awaited dream match between the Cenation leader and the former TNA champion has dominated wrestling news circles.
Joe successfully defended the US title at Fastlane in a Fatal-4 Way match against Rey Mysterio, Andrade, and R-Truth. It's has been said that the WWE Creative intends on getting back the US title's lost prestige and in order to do so, would need to book the Championship in a noteworthy match at 'Mania.
Unsurprisingly enough, Cena has been the frontrunner owing to his history with Joe as the two veterans have been good friends ever since they first trained together in the early 2000s.
The 16-time WWE Champion, though, may not return for the match if Meltzer's latest report is anything to go by...
The heart of the matter
As of this writing, WWE does not plan to have Samoa Joe vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 35. The match has been in the works for quite some time now but has never seen the light of the day due to various reasons. Joe's untimely injuries and Cena's Hollywood commitments have apparently forced WWE to rewrite the plans and it seems the wait to witness the showdown will continue.
However, plans change on a daily basis in Vince McMahon's empire and we wouldn't be surprised if the boss reverts to the original plan.
What's next?
Joe deserves to have a big name 'Mania opponent to solidify himself as a credible champion. Having Cena put over a dominant heel champion would go a long way in restoring the legitimacy of the once sought-after Championship.
