It looks like WWE is not done with the 'King of the Ring' yet and they could be bringing back the prestigious tournament as a full-fledged pay-per-view event in the near future.
441mania.com is reporting that WWE officials have submitted a trademark request for the phrase 'King Of The Ring' on July 28th. The description of the show as seen on the application reads something like this: “a show about professional wrestling…the production and exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service.”
Till date over 20 King of the Ring events have been conducted by the WWE, ever since its inception in 1985. WWE have also used King of the Ring as a full-fledged PPV style event for the company from 1993 to 2002 where the finals of the tournament were held at the event and the qualifiers used to happen at specific Raw episodes prior to that.
The last King of the Ring happened in 2015 where the qualifying matches happened at Raw and the last 3 matches including the semi-finals and final were aired as a separate Network exclusive show.
Since WWE will start brand exclusive PPVs for both Raw and SmackDown soon, it's likely that they will reinstate KOTR as a separate PPV for either of the Brands.
