Miz TV Segment w/ AJ Style: WWE continued the second leg of their London tapings by kickstarting SmackDown with the MizTV. The Intercontinental Champion, along with his wife Maryse, welcomes “The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles as his guest for the night. The Miz questions the #1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship about his involvement in Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows’ planned attack on Roman Reigns last Monday night on Raw. As he denies any involvement Miz tries to dig deeper for details about Styles’ role in the attack on Reigns by his former Bullet Club teammates. When maintaining his innocence and his ability to defeat Reigns on his own don’t prove to be enough to shut the “Hollywood ALister” up, Styles attacks him, leading to the announcement of a match between them for the night. The point behind this segment seems to be of spicing things up between members of the former NJPW stable.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
A tag-team match between Dean Ambrose/Sami Zayn and Chris Jericho/Kevin Owens is also announced.
Ryback def. Kalisto
A WrestleMania 32 (nontitle) rematch takes place between United States Champion Kalisto and Ryback. The latter defeats the champion with a Shell Shocked, but this rivalry between a former WWE Championship challenger and a guy who has had exciting US title matches with Alberto Del Rio fails to draw any positive response from the crowd. The United States Championship also seems to have lost all its prestige garnered by John Cena during and after his feud with Rusev. Even Del Rio and Kalisto put up some exciting matches. So, the problem’s with Ryback’s booking? Quite so.
Baron Corbin vs Dolph Ziggler (No Contest)
A singles match between Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler never begins as the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal winner hits the former World Heavyweight Champion with the End of Days outside the ring. While the big man seems to be finding his feet on the bigger stage, it’s coming at the cost of Ziggler, who has already hurt his chances of rising to the top again. A repeat of the magic of Raw postWrestleMania 29 seems very unlikely now. On the other hand, hopes are that WWE don’t ruin another ‘Big Guy’ character. We aren’t even asking for another Undertaker.
AJ Styles def. The Miz
Next up, we have AJ Styles vs The Miz, as the Intercontinental Champion tries to escape a defeat only to confront The Bullet Club, who force him back into the ring. Styles picks up the win via pinfall, as he maintains an unhappy look along with a stare down with his former NJPW mates. Apparently, there seem to be only two possible outcomes to this angle: Either AJ is actually planning all of this or Anderson and Gallows are about to cost him the main event at Payback. So, either we will witness an AJ heel turn or an angle between Styles and The Bullet Club.Either way, Reigns is again the non-interesting chapter in his own feud.
Dark Segment
The Miz asks for an investigation into Styles’ involvement with The Bullet Club. In reply, Shane O Mac enters the ring to a huge pop, and instead of allowing an investigation he punches the arrogance out of Miz and sends him flying out of the ring.
*Shane announces “an extended version of SmackDown” with dark matches between Corbin and Ziggler, and Styles and Del Rio*
The Bullet Club’s Backstage Interview
In a backstage interview, Anderson and Gallows make it clear that they have come to WWE to make an impact not to assist Styles. While considering The Bullet Club’s exploits in NJPW it will be interesting to see how WWE book them in an already interesting tag team division, considering the entries of Enzo and Cass, and The Vaudevillains, who’ll face each other in the Tag Team Tournament Final. Come Monday, we’ll have the answers as Anderson and Gallows will go one on one with The Usos.
Paige/Natalya def. Tamina/Naomi
This one was to put over Paige in front of her nation’s crowd while the victory also helped Natalya gain some momentum heading into her match against Charlotte for the Women’s Championship. Meanwhile, the former Team BAD members have become the women equivalent of The Ascension.
R-Truth def. Fandango (w/ Special Guest Referee Goldust)
So, this match saw the guy who defeated Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 29 being defeated by a guy who hasn’t been involved in a decent match for a long time. The ‘Golden Truth’ storyline also seems directionless they weren’t even properly involved in the Tag Team Tournament.
Their segments are nothing more than fillers and are just getting repetitive and pointless now. That screen time should rather be given to The Social Outcasts.
Enzo & Cass The Vaudevillains Segment
“Bada Boom, realest guys in the room.” Two charismatic tag teams from NXT are now plying their trade on the big stage. Calling each other “rodent mange” and “SAWFT” the two teams combine to deliver a great promo almost a week before their match at Payback. With their excellent mic skills, these two teams have already proved themselves to be better than the other tag teams, and both of them would make an exciting feud with The New Day.
Main event: Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens def. Dean Ambrose and Sami Zayn
A top rope shoving of Ambrose by the illegal man Jericho helps the Canadian heels secure a big win over the babyfaces as they prepare for their singles action at Payback. In recent weeks, these four top talents have been involved a lot with each other, but that really doesn’t matter as long as they deliver grade A matches.
Despite the absence of top names such as Reigns and Wyatt (injury), this episode has tried to remain on course for Payback. With some interesting singles and tag team action lined up for the payperview, we can expect the event to be a hit despite the lack of some big names.
