WWE: SummerSlam 2013 Preview

Daniel Bryan New

SummerSlam is considered to be the second biggest PPV in WWE’s calendar year. In a few more days, this year’s edition of SummerSlam will roll out from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and the card is stacked with some high profile matches.

When the new General Manager of RAW, Brad Maddox gave John Cena the opportunity to pick his next opponent for SummerSlam the night after the Money in the Bank PPV, John Cena asked the WWE Universe who they wanted to see as the new number one contender.

The answer was unanimous, as the WWE Universe started a huge “Yes” and “Daniel Bryan” chant, which forced Cena to pick the bearded warrior as his opponent. Since then, the two have battled it out on the mic, with Bryan saying Cena mocked the wrestling business.

With Cena getting physical with Bryan, tensions were high this past week on RAW. What will unfold at SummerSlam? With Triple H inserting himself as the special guest referee for the bout, will he influence the outcome? Will Cena beat Bryan? Or will Bryan finally realize his 15 odd year dream of becoming the WWE champion? Also, we cannot forget about Randy Orton, who can cash in his briefcase come Sunday after Cena and Bryan battle it out.

Christian won the number one contender’s match a couple of weeks ago on Smackdown, and will face Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight championship. Ever since ‘Captain Charisma’ made his return to the WWE, he has been asking for ‘one more match’, and he earned the right to face the World champion at SummerSlam for the coveted title.

Christian won his first World Heavyweight championship against Alberto Del Rio a couple of years ago, and hence, things can get interesting between the two as their old rivalry is revisited. With Christian being one of the best workers in the business, one needn’t be surprised if he puts on the match of the night along with the Mexican icon.

Arguably, one of the most anticipated bouts this year will take place this Sunday, as CM Punk will take on Brock Lesnar, which can get really ugly. Expect nothing less than a physical, brutal brawl between the two ‘Paul Heyman guys’, as they fight to find out who really is the best in the business.

With Paul Heyman siding with Brock Lesnar, he will undoubtedly be the difference maker come Sunday. Will Punk overcome the odds and tame the beast? Or will Brock Lesnar show Punk just why he was the youngest WWE champion in the history of the company? I for one cannot wait to see what happens this Sunday at SummerSlam.

Natalya will take on Brie Bella, as the action from ‘Total Divas’ spills into the WWE ring. Will Natalya beat Brie and start her journey to become the new WWE Divas champion? Or will Brie defy the odds and beat the most technically sound women’s wrestler in the world? One has to wonder if the presence of Nikki and Eva at ringside will have any effect on the outcome of the match.

Dolph Kaitlyn

AJ Lee turned on Dolph Ziggler when Ziggler held her responsible for costing him the World Heavyweight championship at the Money in the Bank PPV. Come Sunday, AJ and Big E will take on the team of Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn. Will Kaitlyn and Ziggler get their revenge on AJ and Big E? Or will the Divas champion have the last laugh by beating her former lover and best friend? We’ll find out this Sunday.

Bray Wyatt’s first month on the main roster has been eventful to say the least. With The Wyatt Family targeting the ‘Big Red Monster’ Kane to send their message across, the Devil’s favourite demon proposed a ‘Ring of fire’ match at SummerSlam. Will Kane put an end to Wyatt’s reign of terror? Or will Bray Wyatt make sure that the fire of hatred consumes the monster?

Bray Wyatt’s gimmick has to be one of the best gimmicks in a long time, and the outcome of the match can usher the emergence of the newest demon in the WWE.

Cody Rhodes takes on his former best friend turned foe, “Mr. Money in the Bank” Damien Sandow at SummerSlam. The rivalry started when Sandow cost Cody the briefcase at the Money in the Bank PPV, and retrieved the briefcase himself to earn a shot at the World Heavyweight championship at anytime he chooses within the next one year.

Cody made sure that Sandow wouldn’t have it easy, interrupting Sandow while he tried to cash-in, and threw the briefcase into the Gulf of Mexico. What will happen when the two former allies face each other? Will Cody pick up the victory, and hence stamp himself as the next contender in line for a title shot? Or will Sandow beat Rhodes and prove his worth as a future World champion?

In the pre-show match, RVD will take on Dean Ambrose for the WWE United States Heavyweight championship. RVD won a 20-man over the top rope battle royal to earn the opportunity to face Ambrose at SummerSlam. Will “Mr. Monday Night” add one more title to his already impressive list of championships? Or will Ambrose show RVD just why The Shield has been the most dominating force in the WWE for the past one year? One thing is for sure; you cannot miss SummerSlam this Sunday.
