SummerSlam, the WWE’s biggest festival of Summer, is just days away and the rumour mills are spinning wild. Unlike any other PPV that WWE holds, SummerSlam has a unique reputation. This is where the biggest swerves are pulled and legendary careers are made. This event is known for its penchant for creating unexpected swerves that shock the WWE universe. And the reputation is rightly deserved.
The fact that this is also one of the 4 big PPVs makes a fan’s mouth to water and expect something extraordinary to happen this Sunday. Being the first PPV after the official brand split, WWE will likely try to make this one unforgettable. One way to accomplish the wonder factor is to provide fans with the appearances of Superstars and Legends who were not advertised.
In this list, let’s take a look at five such superstars who could possibly make an appearance at SummerSlam who are not on the cards.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#5 Bayley - A new challenger arises
Sasha Banks and Charlotte have been setting the Raw Women’s Division on fire lately. Ever since Sasha challenged Charlotte for the title, they both have been spewing out great promos and incredible ring work. Their performance is so darn good that we fail to realize there are very few female wrestlers on the roster apart from Sasha and Charlotte.
While Dana Brooke is playing protege to Charlotte, Nia Jax looks as if she is on a different program altogether. Paige is sidelined with injury (now suspended too!). So, if you take a head count there are hardly five women and apart from Charlotte and Sasha and no one is close to being a main eventing material. So, the most likely solution is to drag on this rivalry for a few more months until someone is ready.
But, WWE has cleverly left out Bayley during the draft to insert her into the title picture on either brand when needed. This could likely be Bayley’s entrance ticket and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Bayley in the title picture so soon as she has proven her worth in NXT for a long time. Bayley’s debut to the main roster has been long delayed before she debuted at the last PPV.
WWE is unlikely to make Sasha lose the championship as she is red hot now and the rivalry between the duo has been played out for over two months now. WWE may try to introduce a new challenger once the match is over and what wouldn’t we give to watch Bayley walk down the ramp and challenge Sasha once more for the title? That moment would be E-P-I-C!!
#4 Bray Wyatt – A new feud in the making
Bray Wyatt has been poised to become a major star in the SmackDown roster. It is deservedly so. Bray has been cutting some incredible promos and looks promising in the ring too. His fan base is growing with each day and it only a matter of time before he is inserted into the title picture.
If rumours are to be believed, Bray is likely to disown Eric Rowan and get a singles push soon. While Bray may not be pushed into the title picture now, a solid program with a veteran wrestler is more likely on the cards. WWE made sure that it planted some seeds regarding that during the last SmackDown Live! episode. His staredown with The Viper has made the fans buzz with excitement and it most likely could be a prelude to a program between the two.
The rumour that has been making rounds lately is the interference of Bray in the upcoming SummerSlam match between The Beast and The Viper. It is rumoured that Bray would likely distract Orton to enable The Beast to capitalize and win the match. And if one remembers rightly, Bray has some unfinished business with both of these Superstars.
With Bray not in the cards of SummerSlam, it is more likely that he will interfere in one of the matches during the event. WWE wouldn’t want to let his star power go in vain and as a result, Bray could most likely make a special appearance this Sunday.
Even though Bray’s appearance is all but guaranteed, no one could tell who he is going to attack this Sunday. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
#3 Goldberg – The long awaited rematch!
One other name that is rumoured to interfere in the match of Brock Lesnar is Goldberg. The history between the duo is well known and the last encounter between the duo is not something both the athletes will be proud of. With such a potential for a huge match leaping at each and every junction, WWE would likely capitalize on it.
As if that is not enough, the tension between the duo has been escalating dramatically in the last month alone. Ever since Goldberg was announced as a playable character in the 2K game, there has been hints dropped here and there about a possible rematch between these two powerhouses. The Twitter exchanges have also riled up the fans for a possible return of Goldberg.
It is also to be noted that Goldberg is rumoured to be in the city during SummerSlam. Goldberg may well make an appearance at the event and deliver that mighty spear of his to the Beast. This could most likely be the official beginning of a WrestleMania rematch between the duo.
#2 The Undertaker – It has come a full circle!
None of the big PPVs are complete without this man’s appearance. He has made his name ring synonymous with WrestleMania and likely has one more WrestleMania left in his tank. And this might very well be the place where the journey to that last match begins.
Ever since the last WrestleMania, The Undertaker has been conspicuously absent from the wrestling world altogether. His appearances on the European Tour were cancelled and there were also rumours regarding him and Vince McMahon not seeing eye to eye regarding one last match. But, it all came to end last week when The Undertaker cleared the air about one last match in an interview.
From his words, it was clear that he will indeed have one last match – preferably at WrestleMania. And the most likely candidate for it is none other than the face that runs the place, John Cena. John Cena was rumoured to face The Undertaker last WrestleMania, but his untimely injury prevented it from happening. And it looks like, Vince is keen on making these two giants of WWE collide against each other this time around.
John Cena is set to disappear from WWE programming after his SummerSlam match due to the other commitments he has outside of WWE. The company may use this opportunity to wow the audience and spell the beginning of the grand fight this Sunday.
The history between the duo is well known. The Undertaker was the first one to appreciate John Cena after his debut against Kurt Angle. And it looks like John could very well be the last opponent The Undertaker faces at WrestleMania. It has indeed become a full circle.
#1 Triple H- The ideal double turn?
While there are rumours and hints about other appearances on this list, the appearance of Triple H will be totally unexpected to happen. WWE has gone to great lengths to keep Triple H out of the picture during the siblings’ reign of both shows and the eventual brand split. In fact, Triple H has not shown his face on the main roster after his match at WrestleMania.
While the wheels have been spinning smoothly during Triple H’s absence, his sudden appearance may just be the shot in the arm Raw needs to gain a definitive edge on SmackDown. While his star power is unquestionable, the reason for his reappearance can be questioned. In my opinion, on several fronts, this is the right time for Triple H to make a return.
Firstly, if Triple H had returned earlier, he would have a rematch clause against the WWE Championship which would have complicated matters before the draft. Now, with the WWE championship on SmackDown, that shot at the title becomes void making it more believable for Triple H to return to the role of an authoritative figure.
Secondly, the face turn of Seth Rollins is long rumoured to happen. And what better way to turn Seth face than making Triple H betray him. Seth Rollins and Finn Balor are both wrestlers who are in good terms with Triple H backstage. His sudden appearance during the match would through things into chaos as people wouldn’t know whom he is going to support.
History points that Seth would be the one to receive assistance. But if Triple H turns on Seth, the betrayal may well enable Seth to turn face without much effort. It will also make Finn Balor heel in the process making him suitable to form the long awaited Balor Club and become the new goon squad of Triple H. This could also very well set the tone for a match between Triple H and Seth Rollins at WrestleMania.
With so much to gain, it is more likely that WWE will do this swerve. And if in case it happens, remember that you read it here first!
