WWE: Top 5 wrestlers awaiting a major push

Cody Rhodes WWE

Professional wrestling, much like any other sport, is cut throat. There are performers willing to step over their peers to get the main spot, and become the number one face of the company. Even in the past, we’ve heard about people backstabbing their friends to get to the top, and it happens all the time.

Like any other sport, there are a handful of performers who are seen as the future of the company, as those who will take the baton from their contemporaries and run with it. In professional wrestling, these guys are the “chosen ones”, those who deserve to be at the top, and with age being on their side, will eventually find their way to the top of the food chain.

In the current scenario in the WWE, there are very few superstars who’re seen as “deserving”, and are backed by the legends to become future WWE and World champions. With these guys being some of the best workers in the business, they’ve already established themselves as work horses in the organization, and are waiting in the wings for the right opportunity, to take the ball and run with it.

In this article, I take a look at five such superstars who’re just a step away from becoming main eventers in the WWE, and who deserve to be at the helm in the biggest entertainment organization in the world.

5. Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes is the next big thing

Cody is probably the guy to have brought some credibility back to the Intercontinental championship when he held the title, and after he dropped the belt, it was expected that WWE would push him into the main event scene. As things would have it, Cody was relegated to the mid card, and was left in the middle of nowhere. He is currently involved in a fascinating feud with Damien Sandow, and has proved once again that he deserves to become the World champion.

Cody Rhodes is the son of ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes, and with that kind of legacy and lineage, one would expect Cody to be a main eventer already. Cody has all the tools to be the World champion, and it is only a matter of time before he gets his due push in the WWE.

4. Dolph Ziggler

Dolph

Dolph Ziggler – Up and away!

I’ve always been a big fan of Dolph Ziggler, much like the entire Internet Wrestling Community and the smart wrestling fans in general. The fact that the crowd erupted when Ziggler defeated a face Del Rio proves that Ziggler has earned the respect of the wrestling fans, and although he won the World Heavyweight championship, he lost it at the next PPV, and was once again lost in the shuffle, much like every other ‘Mid card champion’ in the WWE.

There are rumours floating around that Ziggler is in the WWE doghouse for his comments about Randy Orton and Triple H. Ziggler has always been open with his views, and he recently spoke out against WWE’s preference of one guy over the entire roster, which is true. Ziggler is a phenomenal athlete and a great worker, and it is only a matter of time before he gets back on his feet and becomes a legitimate main eventer in the WWE.

3. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins is on the cusp of stardom

Seth Rollins has been an “indy darling” throughout his independent career, and one can easily understand why. Rollins is a tremendous wrestler, and fits the bill of a “high flying wrestler” to perfection. Long before he became a member of The Shield in the WWE, Tyler Black was creating huge waves in the wrestling world, putting on some great matches against the likes of Bryan Danielson (a.k.a Daniel Bryan).

Seth Rollins is pretty good on the mic, and has already put on some great matches in the WWE. He’s one of the best workers in professional wrestling, and can be a mega face, similar to Jeff Hardy, if given the opportunity in the WWE. He’s one of the superstars who can soon be the number three face of the company.

2. Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose – Making it big

I’ve always praised the work ethic of Ambrose. From his psychology to the way he carries himself, Ambrose is a natural heel, something only Piper and Jake Roberts could do. With the likes of Shawn Michaels and JBL (along with Mick Foley and Jim Ross) backing Ambrose up to be the next mega heel in the WWE, very few can doubt his credentials and credibility to make it to the top in the biggest organization in the world.

Much like Daniel Bryan, Punk, Rollins etc., Ambrose worked his way up the ladder in the wrestling world. With Ambrose being in line for a mega push in the near future, one can expect to see him as the number one heel in the WWE in the not so distant future.

1. Antonio Cesaro

Antonio Cesaro

Antonio Cesaro is making huge tides

And at number one is Antonio Cesaro, the muscle man of the WWE. I had a bit of difficulty to choose between Ambrose and Cesaro as my number one pick, but the recent match between Cesaro and Sami Zayn (El Generico) put those doubts to rest, at least for now. Cesaro was involved in a phenomenal 2 out of 3 falls match with Sami Zayn, and they put on a classic in the 15 minutes the match was allotted.

Cesaro is being grossly underutilized, but with Zeb Colter by his side, the sky is the limit for Cesaro. After being the United States champion for a long time, Cesaro is just a step away from breaking the shackles and cementing himself as the next WWE champion.
