The Leader of the Cenation and The Most Must-See wrestler started their feud back at the Elimination Chamber event in 2017, where the two were a part of the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber match and the former pinned the latter. John eliminated Miz during the number one contender battle royal, and the former United States Champion eliminated John Cena.

The Miz then invited the 16-time World Champion on his show Miz TV where he questioned John's ethics while Maryse slapped the face of the company. Nikki Bella came out in support of her boyfriend, and the rivalry continued as Miz and Maryse would make fun of them during their segment by showing up as their nemesis or showing the 'unaired footage' from Nikki's show 'Total Bellas.'

The feud led to the then General Manager of SmackDown announce a match between these two couples at WrestleMania, where the husband-wife duo of Miz and Maryse took on the boyfriend-girlfriend duo of John Cena and Nikki Bella.
