WrestleDream History
AEW and NJPW began a partnership in 2021 where wrestlers from the two promotions regularly showed up at the other company. Their partnership further expanded in June 2022 when they organized the AEWxNJPW: Forbidden Door event.
On October 1, 2022, NJPW’s founder and pro-wrestling legend, Antonio Inoki passed away. He was an inspiration to many, including AEW’s co-founder and CEO Tony Khan. At AEW All In media scrub in August 2023, Khan announced that the company will be organizing a PPV named AEW WrestleDream on October 1, 2023, the one-year anniversary of Inoki’s passing.
The event is named WrestleDream because Khan considered Inoki as “wrestling’s greatest dreamer”.
